Windows as well. Cheapest windows they can possible find.

Cheap, cheap, cheap is the name of the game. Flooring, cabinets, counter tops, shingles, you name it. Sometimes, the garage doesn't even have plywood walls. They fasten that cheap fiber-board to the studs, and cover them with cheap siding. You could literally put on a pair of boots, and kick holes in the exterior of the garage.

CoF, I would go with whichever builder gets the best customer service ratings. I'm just a contrarian know-it-all. I can't help you here.

Most new construction I run across has York or some Ducane furnace and a.c. and that's about as cheap as you can get.

My wife and I are looking to build towards the end of the year so reading this thread is definitely a great warning of pitfalls to avoid.

Avoid builders who build cookie cutters. Most of these houses have pre-fab walls. The carpenters don't actually build the walls on site. The walls get lowered by crane. They are all numbered, so the carpenters put puzzles together.

They'll need a crane, they'll need a crane
To take the house he built for her apart
To make it break it's gonna take a metal ball hung from a chain
They'll need a crane, they'll need a crane

You have to check the customer service ratings from the crane company.

Hinsdale is like that. Northbrook is even worse. My dad's old neighborhood is full of teardown-rebuilds where the houses are inches from the lot lines. Terrible.

I understand the complain about that from suburban dwellers but isn't that stuff basically just like most of the houses in the city?

Better off hiring a GC to run the job for 35k, he will getter better prices from sub's than you and there won't be any fuckups or extras.

IMO, the only way to go now is web trusses so you have an open floor plan and all the mechanicals are in the trusses, no soffits and 9' ceilings.

Depends on the builder. You can choose a cheap one like denis did or get a high quality one.

Well geez, if I had known this thread was gonna run denisdman off the board, I wouldn't have started it, though in my defense, it only escalated once people got to discussing the relative merits of luxury home builders, which I know absolutely nothing about.
