I can't tell you how much my enjoyment of the broadcast has been enhanced since I now know what the exit velocity and launch angle was on the last Rizzo HR

The way I always thought of Hawk and appreciated him was he was a fan with passion. It doesn't matter to anyone but Sox fans how Hawk did his job. He was broadcasting to the fans in a manner he felt comfortable. It wasn't until the last 15 years or so that he got flack because people compared him to modern polished broadcasters. Many times these people were not even Sox fans. I would take a Hawk type guy any time over a Kasper, Buck, Costas type guy.

You think Hawk Harrelson calls a game better than Bob Costas? Okay.

Well, I've watched old Sox games, and he was certainly less weird and more locked in when he worked with Paciorek. And also, in the last 15 years, the internet has allowed people to complain more, and Hawk, with the White Sox still having a decent number of telecasts on the WGN superstation until a year or two ago, was someone everyone could see. If Mike Shannon in St. Louis were on national television instead of local radio, he'd be every bit as loathed as Hawk is now (though again, at least Shannon is undeniably from and of St. Louis).

But I don't think he's often been unfavorably compared with, say, Len Kasper or Brian Anderson or whoever else comes off the assembly line. He's unfavorably compared with other old ex-jocks, like Bob Uecker or Duane Kuiper.

He's routinely called the worst current announcer in baseball if not the entire sports world.

It's ok not to like Hawk. I don't really get the appeal of Vin Scully besides the fact he has been doing the same job for longer than just about anyone has done a broadcasting job. I'm sure that is going to be an unpopular opinion but I'd rather listen to Hawk.

I am not saying he is better at all. I am saying he is different.

You are right Rick and that is my point. Hawk is/was just our/my guy. Example is anyone that thinks Harry was a great announcer his last 15 years is full of shit. He was the Cubs fan's guy though.

Well, if you haven't figured out by now why people thought Vin Scully was so good, you never will.

But speaking of him, in a funny inversion of the times we're in now, L.A. fans and media used to roll their eyes so hard at Scully's backup, Ross Porter, for being -- you guessed it! -- too obsessed with stats. They didn't want to know about player performance, they just wanted to hear Vin speak in lilting poetic cadences about blue skies and green grass and little kids in the stands eating ice cream.

Why was he good? I could say the same statement for Hawk.

Sounds like Chas may have a future in broadcasting !

No shit, BRouge. I can't tell if a ball was hit hard unless I have an exact MPH.

Hawk is old school. DD and Hawk were great as were Hawk and Wimpy.

Hawk on now with M&H. He is explaining how he wanted to be the guy in your bar/living room. Not some network guy. He said Cosell wanted him to do Monday Night Baseball but he wouldn't. When asked why he told Howard because you don't know shit about baseball.

Old school isn't better.

Dayan Viciedo has the quickest bat since Carlos Delgado.

It's a good thing broadcasting is more than showing enthusiasm in an incredibly narrow set of circumstances. Any 2+ minute rant on umpire conspiracies outdoes his best moments combined. Nevermind the stupid anti-stats stuff that he shoehorned into conversations for whatever reason.

I enjoyed Hawk. I'd take a Hawk and Wimpy broadcast a couple games once or twice a year. I haven't listened to him in about two years, however, so I'm not sure if he's gotten worse.

That being said, some of his takes on Latins, Asians, and TWTW have gotten a bit old.

Hawk never said any thing negative. He made generalizations that are now considered racist, but he was just repeating what we had been taught growing up.

When Jason Benetti explained OPS during last night's game after playing footsy with Stone for the entire inning, I had to turn it off. Compare that to the Hawk and Wimpy broadcast in Seattle. One is entertaining. The other is boring with a mix of irritating.

Yeah, I'm having a hard time getting used to Benetti. I like the guy and all, and sometimes his subtle humor makes me laugh, but the going from one to the other is jarring. When I think of baseball announcers, I immediately think of Hawk and Wimpy and Harry and Jimmy.
