Papercuts.

The Goonies and Temple of Doom. I really don't like corpses.

The Exorcist still gives me the creeps, but that movie is awesome.

some teenagers somewhere once told me that if you put something too close to the couch on the floor a hand would come out and grab it. they showed me by putting a shoe on the floor next to the couch and sure enough, a hand came out and grabbed it. i was like maybe 4 or 5. this traumatized me for a while. i would rush to pull things away from the couch, like if my dad took his shoes off or something.

Tornado warnings always scared the shit out of me. Maybe I watched The Wizard of Oz too many times.

When I was a kid in the mid 80s I caught the original Westworld movie on TV and that messed me up for a while. I also think around that
same time I was afraid of that TV series "V". I really don't enjoy horror movies at all.

If you are of a certain age, this should've done it for you. Creepy ass theme (voiced by Marty McNeely) too. Edit: Dammit Mike

The opening theme music got me. It's giving me pause thinking of it now.

Oh, and midgets, dwarves, little people.

And not the one that screams "WHITE LADY" in the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. That one is glorious.

Between that movie and Brynner's anti smoking ad they posthumously released, I always wondered about him

Poltergeist traumatized my twelve year-old self, both by scaring the living daylights out of me and by teasing me with all-too-brief glimpses of JoBeth Williams in her undies. You shouldn't tease a kid in such a way. We didn't have cable in the city then, and so such teasing was cruel.

Two things:

1) Threads. The PBS movie about nuclear war freaked me out more than any other film, novel, campfire story, or encounter with a priest that I have ever had. Jesus Christ, I was not prepared for that. Threads makes The Day After look like Mary Poppins.

1a) Julie Andrews was hot in Mary Poppins.

2) Harold Washington getting elected. Despite the fact that we were three miles from Western Avenue, I expected, based on what I had heard, to hear black Chicagoans rioting in the streets that night. I also thought my dad would get fired from the city. (They didn't; he didn't.) More like a Twilight-Zone panic among people than the fear of ghosts. I wish I could have videotaped some of those conversations.

Up until I was 9 years old I lived on the 6300 block of North Keystone. There was an old German lady who lived across the street who had a tiny little dog named Fritzy. Fritzy was an absolute motherfucker. He was vicious as shit. He was also often able to slip out of his yard. When he did he would come charging toward the nearest human yapping and stripping his teeth. He bit many kids in the neighborhood. That little fucker would chase my friend Lisa Cannata and me when we were on our bikes. I remember once he got hold of my pant leg. I was kicking and screaming and trying to pedal as fast as I could. I was terrified of Fritzy. Eventually, the mothers on the block banded together and went over and told the old frau that she was going to have to do something about Fritzy or get rid of his ass. She put a muzzle on him. Looking back it's kind of sad. Train your fuckin' dog.

The one in our neighborhood was Champ, an angry German shepherd who, when he got out, people blocks away ran for cover

The deaths were effectively chilling, but the classroom scene where Damien humiliates the teacher by knowing all the dates gave me the shivers.

Were you and your friend in the habit of wearing "towels" on your head like a couple of "goofs"? That would probably explain Fritzy's animus towards you--unless I'm getting my Fritzies mixed up again.

 Different Fritzy. The one you're talking about only scares me when we're sitting at the bar at Player's and he loses a close photo at Santa Anita.
