We had the same deal last Monday...met my in-laws in Burns Harbor to get the kids. Sat in the same spot on 94 for like 20 minutes in the express lanes, and didn't get any traffic relief until we hit the border.

Its inexplicable. Every year they do construction on 94 between MI and IL. Nothing ever seems to actually be done. Its just construction for the sake of employment. The part they are working on now is only 5 years old maybe... I literally don't have a route to any customer or my office that doesn't involve major construction traffic.

Around late summer 2013, they were working around Burns Harbor through like Michigan City or so...then to top it off, when we'd get about 10-12 miles over the Michigan border, we had construction up through St Joe's...and because that's when we were getting married, I made that trip several more times than I normally would...yeah, that was...something...

I must drive from North Chicago to Detroit on Friday to be at some event at 9:30 PM. Directions are stating between 4.5 hours and 6.2 hours. That just sucks. Is that accurate given your collective experiences on I-94?

I'd allow at least 4 hours coming from where I live in NWI.

From my front door...assuming Downtown is a ghost town (which is wildly implausible), I have to add 60 minutes just to get to your border. You are saying 4 hours from your domicile to Detroit?

Was up there a month or so ago and it sucked but it's been a lot worse in past. Heading up again soon for a vacation which will be needed after the drive.

That stretch along the border of Indiana is just awful. It's just wall-to-wall semis for miles. You need to try and go through that stretch during off hours or it will always be gridlock.

Go around the city...will probably be 30-45 minutes faster than going through Downtown on a Friday, unless you're leaving at like 6 AM...we do that when we go visit my inlaws in Western Michigan...and I live fairly close to North Chicago...

Its amazing. I've been coming from out west and hit traffic right past the intersection of 55/80 and been stuck in traffic for hours. Could have walked faster than we drove. Same time of day, different day there is no traffic and you go right through. I've hit bad traffic at 11 at night. Generally seems to be worse for me going east bound than west but the drive can vary by as much as 2 hours depending on how screwed up traffic is. In the past I always felt that as soon as we hit the Indiana border we would be home free but when I was going up for the funeral it was clear until Indiana and than we hit the traffic hard. If I didn't have kids I would go up at 1 am for the vacation but I doubt the little gremlins would let me sleep till noon the next day to recover and god knows the entire car but me would get those hours of sleep in before we get there and feel refreshed.

There are a few interstates that if there is a sunny morning... traffic is fucked as early as 6am (stevenson, even the tri-state gets hit early by sun delays)

Depending on the time of year, my last 2 miles on the Tri State in the morning (Lake-Cook to Willow) can get a little hairy in the morning...
