Return to Oz scared the living crap out of me for some reason. I'm trying to remember if I saw the whole thing but all I remember was the mother of my friend wondering why she took us to this movie. Temple of Doom was pretty bad too but neither of these were things that consumed me with fear. The neighbors German Shepherd dogs that chased me up a tree on the other hand were pretty bad but they moved away when I was 8. Beyond that while I was easy to startle (Brother liked hiding behind doors and jumping out at me in dark to get me to react, it never failed) most things didn't scare me too much.

The Oompa Loompas

I think it was because they were, at best, unmoved by suffering and at worst, took glee in it.

The funny thing about Willy Wonka is that I find it scarier and more disturbing as an adult than I ever did as a kid.

I forgot... I lived in perpetual fear of quicksand. According to cartoons and tv shows I watched it was everywhere and I just knew that was how I was going to die.

The movie Beetlejuice.
Airplane lights in the window at night because I was worried they were aliens.
For some bizarre reason, King Kong showing up.
Bees(because every kid is taught that bees are the worst things ever)

Because of the middle two, I would listen to sports radio to fall asleep. I have no idea what it even was but I assume it was whatever the station that had the White Sox but it sounds like the Score didn't even broadcast when it was dark out. Anyone have any idea what channels would have been on at night that talked about sports in the early 90s?

The Dallas sports station--I think it was The Ticket--could often be heard on the Score's frequency (820) after sunset in the early 90s. Skip Bayless got his broadcasting start there.

I used to listen to that station also. Came in clear as next door in the evenings.

I was always in fear of the impending nuclear holocaust and The Twilight Zone.

Speaking of the Twilight Zone. The plane segment in the TZ movie scared me pretty good as a youngster.

oh yeah Unsolved Mysteries for sure

It was the music. Very haunting.

Robert Stack too.

I loved Unsolved Mysteries and how Robert Stack presented that show. His voice was cryptic. Which I found awesome.

Some cable network used to show the reruns. Maybe 10 years ago or so. I don't see them anymore. I used to watch the reruns. Cuz I missed a lot of them when I was a kid or didn't remember so they were new to me.

Just as I'm sure you alerted the proper authorities if you found out you neighbor's taste in periodicals was a little red.

dudes who painted their fingernails black. but then again i'm probably just living up to a stereotype here as i was the kind of person who made an anti-nine inch nails shirt in high school. the front had the NIN logo X'd out and the back had the top 4 reasons that trent had convinced you that you're nothing. reason #1 was that your wallet chain clashes with your flannel, i forget what #2 and 3 are, and reason #4 was that you literally call up people telling them that you're nothing. i'm pretty sure the hand holding the phone in #4 had black fingernails!

The Jonbenet Ramsey murder coverage was a big thing when I was a kid. Watching television or seeing newspapers/magazines in the grocery aisle freaked me out because I was the same age. I'm pretty sure that was my first realization that life isn't all roses and sunshine. Humans do bad things and we're flawed.
