Thin crust > Deep dish for me, but when I do go deep, I'm still a Girodano's fan. My ex fawned over Lou's and I couldn't get into it. Now it's tainted.

Edwardo's is a really great pizza. But the whole deal with the franchising got fucked up. Edwardo got fucked six ways to Sunday. He's one of those simple guys. He just wanted to run his little pizza shop with fresh ingredients on Howard Street. The sharks were too much when they got hold of him. First, I'm pretty sure he trained the Giordano's guys so they could steal his recipes. Then when the franchise boys showed up, all Ed was really interested in was not giving up the rights to his place on Howard. I'm not sure where Ed is these days.

This is probably the best tip for a Lou's order and it beats whatever weird exercise Shakes needs to do everytime he orders a pizza.

Deep Dish rankings for anyone with taste buds.

1. Lou Malnati's
HUGE GAP
2. Pequods
3. Uno's/Due's
4. Giordanos
5. Genos

For years I thought Edwardo's (Hyde Park) was wildly underrated. For 20 yrs. it had a different, fresher taste than other places, especially if we're talking carry out. I always thought they were ripping off Medici well(3 doors down on 57th St. for 30+ years iirc). Lou's & Gino's crust are better, and imo Giordano's has only ever been good if you eat in(the crust turns to mush quickly over time.

I was shocked when that location closed a few years ago, I guess now I know why.

There's an Edwardo's on North in Oak Park. Have not been in 10 years though it looks like they recently remodeled the place. maybe should give it another go.

Agreed with OP. The Lou's special has no meat, yet is STILL fantastic. The tomatoes man, the tomatoes...

i hardly ever have it but a few weeks back I found myself having Pequod's twice in one week. The first time they really skimped on the cheese and toppings for some reason and it was way too bready. Second one was much better.

Portillo's is good food, but I agree that it's overrated. I think it's more of a Chicago cultural thing, which is fine. I like Portillo's; I just don't think it's so good that every single one of them is backed up into the road with two lines every day.

I've never done the wait around the block thing for it, but Portillos is far and away the best fast food in the area. Given that, not sure it can be overrated.

The Mecca still has cops directing traffic around the one on Golf after like 20 years of that place being open.

even w/ the long lines tho, it always moves. there could be a Portillo's drive through line with 20 cars in it and you're last, and you'll get your order quicker than a Taco Bell drive through with 2 cars in front of you

Gotta agree with Leash here. Portillo's is great but not head and shoulders above the mom-and-pop joints. In fact, I haven't been impressed with the Italian beef at Portillo's, as good as everything else is.

Portillo's chili and cake shake are the best things on their menu.

I often hit up Portillos when I am in area more so because it's different than what I can get out here. It's only really bad maybe 10% of the time as far as wait is concerned but never significantly different than many other fast food places As Bagels said. Don't think I've ever been in line more than a few minutes. Better than grabbing other crap as I head west again.

Yeah, and it's close enough to that tourist trap of a mall that morons that don't know where they're going still completely fuck up mid day Golf road traffic.

the out of towners I've taken to Portillos have all been thoroughly impressed. Leads me to believe it's not overrated and the ones saying it is are spoiled by the tremendous amount of quality food options in the area.

They're all high when they eat it so that doesn't count.

No one said Portillo's is bad. Even if you think Portillo's is awesome, that doesn't preclude it from being overrated. Portillo's is bragged up more than any place I can think of. When I have people from out of town, the first thing they say is they want to try Portillo's. It's so popular that saying it's overrated isn't really even an insult.

Also, it may technically be fast food, but it shouldn't be compared to typical "fast food" restaurants. It's more fair to compare it to local beef/gyro/sandwich joints that actually serve fresh food and take a few minutes to fill your order.
