Noted stud Clayton Richard is the latest to shut these fairies down. 6 innings of 1
run ball.

This is the kind of win that makes you sigh and look towards the imaginary camera in your home and say "a win is a win" in a dejected voice like the animals that were the appliances in The Flintstones.

Did that make sense? Fuck it I'm drinking.

that game was absolutely the definition of "a win is a win". i'm hoping monty can be a beacon of light tonight. that means they're going to have to actually score some runs.

What do you guys think of what Rizzo did?

I don't think its a cheap shot at all, and it used to be part of the game. However Rizzo was in clear violation of the rule way the way it it written now. Will be interesting to see if MLB fines or suspends him.

Yeah he probably will be fine or something.

It is stupid. What is a guy supposed to do in that spot? Just concede that you are out and get tagged...

What was Rizzo supposed to do? Stop and let him tag him? It's a dumb rule they made after Posey got hurt... If the catcher left a path for Rizzo he would have taken it and slid.

Hedges did leave a path for Rizzo. The entire backside of the plate was wide open. The last two steps, Rizzo went toward the catcher and barreled him over. Rizzo himself said that he knew he was going to be out so he did what he had to do. I don't have a real problem with what he did, but its a clear violation based on the the way the rule is written.

By the rule, yes. Suspend him.

Maddon doubled down in the post game saying it's part of the game and right choice if the catcher is over the plate. Assuming the base runner is in the basepaths on contact what can they do.

I agree. Hedges was not over the plate. He was in front of it, and Rizzo had plenty of room to slide to the back half of the plate. Instead he chose to change his path and run into the catcher. Maddon sounds like a dope a lot of times, but this time he sounds extremely silly.

Then it sounds like a must slide rule . Little league .

Kind of like they have to do at first, second, and third base?

The season in on the brink and you do whatever it takes to win the game. I wouldn't expect the Subdivision to know what competitive baseball is though.

• A runner may not run out of a direct line to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher, or any player, covering the plate. If he does, the umpire can call him out even if the player taking the throw loses possession of the ball.
• The catcher may not block the pathway of a runner attempting to score unless he has possession of the ball. If the catcher blocks the runner before he has the ball, the umpire may call the runner safe.
• All calls will be based on the umpire's judgment. The umpire will consider such factors as whether the runner made an effort to touch the plate and whether he lowered his shoulder or used his hands, elbows or arms when approaching the catcher.
• Runners are not required to slide, and catchers in possession of the ball are allowed to block the plate. However, runners who do slide and catchers who provide the runner with a lane will never be found in violation of the rule.

There is nothing saying the runner must avoid contact. If the runner leaves the basepaths, he is out. If the catcher blocks without the ball he is safe. If the catcher has the ball and blocks the plate its poundtown.

There is zero doubt Rizzo violated the rule. The catcher had the ball and left Rizzo a clear path to the plate.

My guess is it won't be a suspension, but a fine.

The baseline is the direct line to the plate from third base when tagging to attempt to score on a fly ball to center field.

The last two steps Rizzo took was away from his current path and towards the catcher. Rule = Broken.

Dirty, clean, whatever, but he violated the rule 100%.

I highly doubt there would be MANY in this forum saying "clean play" if it was Contreras or Montero that got run over.
