I think almost to a man, they didn't work hard at all in the off season and the Lovie Smith country club spring training to bring them along slowly obviously hasn't worked, The way this team is currently constructed they won't go on a long run of winning games , theyre just not capable of doing that this year. Theyre more likely to lose 6 in a row than win 6 thats for sure. Second half isn't going to be any better unless people actually fucking believe Arrieta , Lackey, etc are going to get better as the season progresses which is highly doubtful. All in all, they couldn't follow up a WS winning year any worse to this point yet somehow the arrow still points down. Just fucking brutal all around.

All the energy seems used up from last year. Having said that, let's hope they don't make any desperate trades this year and give up pieces crucial to their long term success. They may sneak into the playoffs, but look like a 1 and done team for sure. The real work is rebuilding a starting rotation behind Lester, Hendricks and Montgomery who looks like a solid #4 starter.

Go ahead and quote for me any of those experts saying that the rest of the NL should not even try...

People predicting that the Cubs would win the division is not even close to them saying that no one in the entire league has a shot at them.

14 of the 35 picked the Cubs to win the pennant.

https://www.sbnation.com/a/mlb-2017-season-preview/amp

All but one predict the Cubs to win the pennant
http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/2017- ... edictions/

Bleacher Report's guy had the Cubs winning 101 games. There was PLENTY of Cub love preseason.

Thanks for proving my point. Still no one saying that the rest of the NL should not even try.

Plenty of Cub love is still not someone saying the rest of the NL should pack it up and do something else.

 Of course nobody said those exact words. The Cubs were the overwhelming preseason favorite from MANY experts.

If that is the stance you are going to foolishly take RFDC, you can never accuse Rick of being obtuse again. Ever.

Cool.

As I said, you can never accuse anybody else of being obtuse unless you want to come off as the biggest hypocrite on the board.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the majority of publications and writers will predict the previous seasons WS Champs to win their division and contend for the pennant the following year .

Which I can't figure out considering no one has repeated in 16, soon to be, 17 years.

Neither. But - regarding Frank- how long do we allow this dipshit to arrogantly masquerade as though he's clever or making good points and not someone who would be better suited for a message board about play-doh?

I'm not sure what you consider a desperate trade. They will have to address the starting rotation in a major way by no later than the off season. The FA market is not great so if they will probably have to make a trade for a top of the rotation type. Any TOR discussion will start with Jimenez. Given those facts, why not make a move now and give yourself a greater possibility this year and succeeding years.

A playoff rotation of Lester, Hendricks and traded player would be formidable.

I think the greatest gift bigfan did for Cubs fans was deleting the huge amount of posts mocking the 2006 White Sox and the inherent idea that 2005 was somehow tainted because they failed to deliver a quality followup to that season.

In the words of former poster, rogers park bryan, Kenny rolled the dice and they all came up aces!

I have heard from several media sources this cock and bull story about Cubbie administration knowing before the season that they would not be competitive for a world series and therefore chose not to overly participate in the FA market.

Normally, I would say these are justifications after the fact by apologists but it was said by guys like Bernstein, Rozner and Jesse who all have Cubbie sources.

If this story is true, how are not fans incensed? You had a social contract with the team that you would accept the worst period of losing in cubbie history in exchange for the team having sustained success and doing everything it could to "go for it" when with necessary FA parts when the minor league players were finally ready.

That story seems like total bullshit. Lackey and Arrieta sucking was very predictable to everyone except Caller Bob but I highly doubt Theo and Co. thought the entire team would not be good.

This is a Rozner story. I was listening when it unfolded. It came from a source that Rozner initially disregarded as not connected. This is clearly fake news. Bernsie asked the "what if" question but did not report the Cubs actually did that.

It's all about bites at the apple. If the Cubs choose to not contend in this division this season, they should rightly face some blowback, even taking the WS into consideration. Their aim was to be a better Braves.

They are a better Braves...by half a game right now.

It was my understanding that Bernstein WAS reporting it as some kind of genius, front office move influenced by advanced statistical analysis.

This is another opportunity for a bite of the apple. On the one hand, EVERYONE I hear asked still believes the Cubbies will win the division. Those same people also espouse the "playoffs are a crapshoot" theory. However, those same people are also saying the Cubs shouldn't make any trades now because the team will not make noise in the playoffs. Pick a lane (not you).

I agree. I think the Cubs should make moves because they won't win this division as presently constituted, despite the Brewers probable sell-off in the near future.

And the playoffs are a crapshoot. Just ask the 06 Cards, as RFDC posted. It's 14 plus games out of 162.

Well the 06 Cardinals had a guy named Pujols hit .330 with 49 jacks in the middle of that lineup. This team is nothing like them.
