from the "am i the only one who's noticing this?" dept, lately i've noticed that when i run into hijab-rocking teenage/ish (read: teen-to-20something?) muslim chicks working at various places that more-often-than-not they'll have some kind of brown/gold/something tattoos on their hands/wrists and seemingly going up their forearm/s. at first i thought it was some kind of drawn-on-fake-tattoo thing, but then when i eventually asked one chick about it they said it's real [and it's spectacular.... just without the seinfeld reference, of course! #Savages #Heathens #NonItGetters cuz they dont know Seinfeld! you gotta TRY to learn our culture, honey! =]

AHEM. but yeah a perfunctory google search (of "what the hell is up with these brown tattoos on muslim chicks?" =) returned this one, which is often the "floral" or uhhh.... dare i say "tribal" style that these tattoos are in, except they're a much lighter brown-or-[off gold] color compared to this "traditional" color of tattoo ink:



and uhhh yeah, that perfunctory googling also reveals that evidently it's halal to have these [still relatively modest, at least compared to fully-sleeved] tattoos on your hands/feet cuz i guess they jibe with the whole burqa/modesty deal, so i guess this is the contemporary muslim girl equivalent of the 1920s flapper movement where women could show a little calf, "bob their hair", and "flaunt their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior"

So has anyone else noticed this trend/fad/style/whatever on young/er muslim chicks they encounter @ various retail/ish places in chicago/land?

...and does anyone else find the whole "modesty with a side of flair" thing a little bit !!!, especially when you take into consideration that these chicks are evidently some quality "earners" too? =]

yeah, when i look at this i'm pretty damn sure this is what i've been seeing. i had no idea that it was a pre-existing style going back like this, you know, i was just a layman noticing that it seemed like 75%+ of teenage/20something chicks in burqas that i came across had these hand-tats going on, and i was genuinely wondering if this was a legit trendy fad or just something i was noticing, clearly as part of a grand conspiracy to get me to desire and ultimately marry a woman with modesty and a side of flair.

btw, a few weeks back when i made a crazy bread run there was this rather cute burqa'd up chick working the register @ my local little caesar's.... as i was getitng my bread i couldn't help but notice a giant BACON N PORK PIZZA ad covering up most of the counter space in front of her, so while she was ringing me up i had to go and ask "so hey i gotta know, are people actually dumb enough to ask you if you've tried this pizza here?" --- she immediately lit up with a smile and is like "hell yeah they are, they ask me all the time actrually!" -- i quickly retorted "so do you think they're genuinely clueless, or do you think they're being assholes about the whole 'say no to swine' thing?" -- she said "i want to give them the benefit of the doubt, but i don't know which way that would go because they're either being stupid or they're being assholes; pretty much damned if you do damned if you don't"

at this point i just had to crack a wicked little wry grin cuz this chick seemed cool enough to have some fun with.

so i go "well hey you know i'm in a pretty odd spot right now, cuz idk if you know what this is like, but right now i feel like i'm having to step up and represent my race of white people when i say that i'm sorry for my race generally being a bunch of dumb assholes. i'd love to tell you #NotAllWhitePeople, but to be quite honest a pretty decent amount of them are pretty much dumb assholes, unless they've got some kind of flourescent colored hair and a pedantic vibe when they go out of their way to show you that they're racially cool, then they're REALLY dumb assholes who quite honestly can be written off as a lost generation: ask yuri brezmenov!"

ol girl laughed her ass off while i did that schpiel there and ended up high fiving me after it, and when i asked for a couple'a napkins for the car she gave me like 3/4 of the whole damn stack.... i dont think i'm gonna have to buy dinner napkins for another month or two.... easy!

and yes, indeed, little ceasar here had the brown "henna" hand tats, so you know, i guess it is one of the mandatory 15 pieces of flair, eh? =]
