I even think that is a little bit of a stretch. If Donald Trump retweets your last post do you become a public figure?

You are conflating 2 different things: "actively in the news" and "public figure." They are not identical.

If he isn't a public figure then outing him is wrong.

Even for a Purdue guy you are being obtuse. They guy made a gif that became part of the story. Ergo, he became part of the story even though he is not a public figure.

The explanation provided in that link for why that statement of legalese was added makes zero sense

Of course, the Kinja comments never fail to disappoint:

If you think a joke .GIF is policy we should find out who you are and remove you from society so your stupid thoughts can't cause any harm.

WAS THERE COLLUSION BETWEEN THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION AND THE CREATOR OF THE .GIF????? I think we need a committee to investigate. Jeff Sessions is probably working on anti-Hillary memes all day in the Capitol basement.

What is it with everyone calling Rick obtuse now? I've never noticed.

1. No, he didn't. HanAssholeSolo did not create the GIF tweeted out by Trump. In fact, what Trump tweeted wasn't even a GIF. At best, HAS's work was merely the inspiration for someone who does Trump's digital media.

2. Even if the one tweeted was made by HAS, saying it's acceptable or ethically sound to report his name, address and place of occupation is absurd. HanAssholeSolo created and posted the GIF, the person behind the moniker is not newsworthy. The public has no interest in who made a goddamned GIF.

CNN wanted to fire back at Trump, and thought they struck gold when they found out that they could pin the creation of Trump's tweet on a bigoted redditor, while also signalling their own virtue by not doxxing him, but still implying they would doxx him if he rescinded his apology and started posting on T_D again.

I just take it as a desperate attempt to defend a bad point.

Exactly. This guy didn't even know. I could almost understand if he tweeted it to Trump or if Trump paid him. This guy almost had his life ruined because he made a funny gif and someone else stole it or the idea.

It is scary so many think this guy deserved to have his life ruined.

I love the fact that CNN is getting blasted here. This is hilarious. Glad they're learning about consequences for fucking with the power of the internet.

He's a racist, anti-Semite. He deserves to be outed so people know what he is really like when they deal with him offline.

If you didn't insist on conflating being part of the story (even if mistakenly so) with being a public figure, it wouldn't happen.

Yes. Say what you want, but prepare to be held accountable. If you want to parade with the Klan or the Nazis or Mike Madigan, you should be outed so your neighbors can shun you, if they so choose.

Edit- that being said, do I really care who these idiots are? Am i going to work to out anyone? No. But, don't go all wussy if you say crap.and then get outed.

What about people who do other disagreeable things like get abortions or donate to a radical preacher or Imam? What's more, who gets to decide what is disagreeable and deserves public outing and shaming? You? Twitter?

And who is to decide what speech is unpopular?
Dude if you were smart and reasonable you'd defend to your death the right of the klan or Nazis to shout their message from a mountaintop? Someday what you think is right might be considered unpopular speech.
Are you prepared to be required to be held accountable for your thoughts, be they as they may less extreme than Nazi extremism? I mean what we have here iin this case isn't exactly Nazism or klan speak, we can certainly agree, yes?

We need to amend the First Amendment to include an anti-doxxing provision that protects against the government AND private parties from airing your dirty laundry!

I don't think medical procedures aee comparable to people making public statements in public online forums.

Do you believe that the contents of the "What do you do to unwind" thread, in which some confess guilt to misdemeanors, should be used as a reason to expose the true identities of the posters real names and divulgence of that information to their employers which would certainly create a strong case for their dismissal?
