There's counter examples everywhere. The Spurs have the second best player and next best player in the world and if they tanked it was 20 years ago and not since. Daryl Morey in Houston has gotten Chris Paul, James Harden, and previously Dwight Howard when he was actually in demand and he's never had a top 10 pick in his Houston tenure. I don't think many even would have criticized the losing for three years purposely if it was done in a different way. If you just put a shitting roster together at the start and say roll with this is one thing. The blatant deadline dumps and other transactions that pulled the rug out from under the fans during a particular season was off putting.
