Im not reading all this. Is the consensus that they should have traded Q in the off season and his value has plummeted?

They tried to be halfway crooks with this rebuild

I'm old enough to remember when RPB was a valuable poster here.

I agree they should've traded him in the winter. Pretty sure he's still on the team right now though.

No, it's not. That's why he wasn't traded then and will be now.

I think this assumes a level of competency from the front office that is undeserved.

Not really. I just think it's pretty clear what the market is. There are teams that are/are going to be desperate for a starting pitcher and Quintana is the best one available. That desperation wasn't there over the winter.

Then why didn't they wait til now to trade Sale?

They certainly could have, but Sale was the best pitcher in the game (or at least in the conversation) and there is always going to be a strong market for a guy like that especially when it's paired with an obscenely under market contract. Also, I don't think there was nearly the concern about Quintana blowing up his arm as there is with Sale.

Q should've gone 6 months ago, but even more troubling is the lack of other moves. They really cant find a buyer for Robertson now? Or even Kahnle?

Or they are cutting their losses?

Teams are more desperate but his performance this year may have dropped him more than being mid season raises his value

He has 3 more years. There is no imperative to move him. When he goes you can bet it's because his value was at its peak.

What if his value isn't at it's peak then?

You seem to be apologizing for Hahn and KW a lot in the past six months

Then he won't be traded. But I look at the market and I believe he will. Hahn has maximized the two major assets he's moved. He's not just going to give guys away becsuse America thinks it's time.

Hahn had to move two major assets because he's a shit GM that couldn't build a contender around them, and now I'm supposed to trust he knows what he's doing? I don't think so.

They fucked up the Sale trade pretty bad. Devers is at least better than Kopech, probably even Moncada, now. Shouldn't have settled for less on the true prize, especially if they were willing to drag out dealing inferior Quintana 6 months longer than they should have. At least we got Victor Diaz (MIA) and Luis Basabe (.640 OPS)!

The Eaton trade is playing out well enough though, Giolito is getting better and Dunning has been a bit of a revelation.

But I cannot stop thinking how much better this would look if they hadn't given Tatis Jr. away to the Padres and settled on the Sale deal. Devers and Tatis Jr would look really nice alongside Moncada, Robert, Collins (weathered a brutal slump and kept his OPS over .800, I'm encouraged) and Burger as position players in the system. Sox wouldn't be absolutely forced to take the best position players in the draft or in the Quintana trade had this front office not made such a mess of things already.

I'm just a cub fan so flame away, but it's nothing but homerism to say his value hasn't peaked considering he had used up 1/6 of his team friendly contract on a bad season. The only way his value appreciates while consuming his cheap season would be if he has pitching lights out.

Don't get me wrong, he is still incredible valuable, but he has lost value since the off season.

Trading Sale and Eaton was absolutely the right move. On the Eaton trade I'm comfortable saying now that they even got the right players back, I'm becoming increasingly confident that they will at least find a good (#3 type) rotation starter and lights out bullpen guy from that trade at minimum and that's well worth an overrated, injury prone CF like Eaton. But yes, the execution on everything else has been pretty shitty. They even fucked up the Robert signing by agreeing to play him in the Dominican for tax purposes, and now he's fucked up his knee playing on a shitty field in a dumpster country with bad doctors.

You can definitely doubt Rick Hahn and the job he has done so far in the rebuild. Its really looking kinda grim, especially with the struggles guys are having in the minors.

And the guys they should be looking to get in return (Kyle Tucker, Ronald Acuna, etc) have gotten much more valuable. Sox could've had those guys easily this offseason, now they'd be kissing Coppy or Lunhow's feet to get them in a 1-for-1 swap for Q.

He's pitching the same as he always has and the demand is higher than it was in January. No homerism here. I dislike Quintana. But thst isn't the view of him in MLB.

His value goes up for teams wanting to go all in on winning the world series this year. See the Cubs and Indians of last year.

Why would those teams settle for a 4.50 ERA pitcher?
