Great weird, but not too weird, snack items. Also delicious yet bad for you frozen foods, but not as bad as they could be.

guess it depends on how much value you place on the free samples and having some hipster "ooh, ahh" and comment on everything you freaking buy during checkout. they suckered me in for a minute back when the one upstairs in the storage facility opened on Clybourn back a decade or more ago. While it was fun to shop and buy cheap wine, the actual food was about what you'd get shopping generics in a regular grocery store in terms of quality. TJ's thing seems to be shaving quantity per item/package to make the prices seem better/more competitive than they are.

wake me up when aldi's has those dark chocolate mini [reese's style] peanut butter cups tho. those things are like crack, in that way that people with no real hard drug/s experience say that really good things are like crack to them.

Owned by the same German Bros but not even close in terms of merchandise. If you don't like TJs that's fine but you clearly don't know what you're talking about.

Anyone who says Aldi's and TJ's are the same doesn't know what they are talking about. They both share a very strict policy not to use any vendors who do busines wirh the other retailer. That is a fact.

I have exactly four things I buy routinely at Trader Joes because I can't find what I like elsewhere for a reasonable price, and I stop in every 2-3 months to stock up when I'm passing by - turns out that I just stopped there this morning.

1. Curry simmer sauce.
2. California dried apricots
3. Apple flavored cereal bars
4. The 3-pack of 72% chocolate bars up by the register

Any time I've tried something from the refrigerator case, or any entrees from the freezer, it's been not worth the price.

I was in an Aldi in Berlin a couple of years ago and their "American" stuff was all TJ's branded.

Their gyoza sauce is excellent. Picked that up along with garlic aioli mustard, sweet onion and bacon vinaigrette, and some pita chips.

We often make a quinoa dip using the red quinoa below:

The back of the bag has the recipe and you can find all the ingredients right at Trader Joe's. Trying to remember, but its basically fresh cilantro, cilantro dressing, lime, cuban black beans, roasted corn, avocado and tomato. You end up spending about $50 bucks, but you get about six or so servings from it. Plus its relatively healthy for you.

I also use their breaded tilapia for making fish tacos, but I can't find the crema and queso there so I get my fish taco ingredients elsewhere.

Outside of that, I used to get some of their trail mixes, but I just can't justify the high cost. Some of their granola bars are decent. Otherwise, Meijer is still the best for groceries as long as you use their mobile app consistently.

If you know how to read packaging to find "pure" foods that don't have extra ingredients, you'd realize that TJ's and Aldi are not the same place. Now, Aldi has some good finds in there and there could be some redundant items, but TJ's without a doubt has items that Aldi does not have. That's also not to say that everything in TJ's is a total health win, either, because there's plenty of unhealthy items, too.

I go there for Almond Milk, sprouted grain bread, oatmeal, quinoa, barley, faro, almond butter, and fruit spread. Some of the refrigerated/frozen stuff is good to have around - bolognese ravioli, Mexican dishes or tamales, etc...

Aldi's is awesome. I'll buy anything there other than meats or produce. They have cheap wine and beer too.

Yeah, cuz "pure foods" often come in plastic packages with bar codes and "sell by" dates. :D

The point being, I can buy a loaf of bread that has shorter shelf life at TJ's, because it's ingredient list isn't too long and filled with fillers and oils. Just bread like you'd make if you wanted to bake a loaf at home. That kind of "pure."

Trader Joe's is the like the bizarro Aldi. They both have fairly small locations but are almost completely different.

Trader Joe's=Free carts Aldi's=$.25 to rent a cart
Trader Joe's has about 10 employees in store. Aldi has 3 or 4 people working the store.
Trader Joe's has free grocery bags. Aldi charges for bags.
Trader Joe's has expensive produce. Aldi has cheap produce.
Trader Joe's has samples. Aldi would never have samples.
For $20 at Trader's you get 3 to 5 items. For $20 at Aldi you could walk out with 10 to 15 items.
Trader Joe's positions itself as a cheaper Whole Foods alternative. Aldi positions itself as a cheaper Walmart/Jewel alternative.
Trader Joe's has mostly store brand items. Aldi has added some third part items like Coke and Proctor and Gamble.
Trader Joe's customers are yuppies who are dropping big money. Aldi customers are people looking to save money.

Aldi stands behind their peaches, while Joe bans you from the store because God makes the peaches and he just sells them.
