I am not a music guy, but I love the underlined song. I was also surprised that I liked some of the Eminem stuff after watching 8 Mile.

Just about every track on Illmatic.
That whole album is genius.

1989 - Ryan Adams. Seems so poppy for him almost like a Taylor Swift album.

When Nas is on there is no better. He suffers from laziness but hot damn when he doesn't.

Pearl Jam - "Corduroy"
I believe I once derided Eddie Vedder as "sexless murmuring" and I stand by that but I love this song, especially the bridge.

Rolling Stones - "Gimme Shelter"
Biggest case of song I love by band I don't. It's one of the best rock songs of all time but I will never care for the Stones.

Metallica - "Orion"
I don't hate Metallica, I just have no use for metal, but no one can hate this song.

Greatest collection of producers on an album ever and arguably the best rapper.

39 minutes of perfection

Now I have to say this is an odd one.

Summer of 69 by B Adams is one for me. Always thought that was a good tune.

Yeah, solid song...too bad Bryan Adams had the remainder of his career.

The album clearly rubbed off on you cuz I think it's fair to say that on the board you post "like a cheetah with thoughts of an assassin" =]

On topic, I gotta admit that I'm not s big fan of "modern rap" (especially compared to my 90s underground/ish wheelhouse) cuz a lot of it is just the typical braggadocio fluff ("I'm the shit and you need to know this") that has compelled me to define rapping as "saying what people wish they could say in a way they never thought of saying it before"--- but it just doesn't sound good. The wordplay/cleverness is typically way down in favor of blunt/str8forward "realness" and the overall sound of the beat + less-clever-verbiage tends to sound like what I call "a cesspool of materialism circling the drain"

THAT SAID

I think it was last year (or maybe 2015?) where my favorite rap song of the year came from a hamburger helper mixtape (of all places), and for a couple'a glorious minutes the MC rocks a solid gold hamburger helper metaphor to ultimately create an awesome awesome catchy song that always cracks me up when dude recoils like "PUT THAT HEAT ON ME... I'M IN THE KITCHEN 300 DEGREES HOMEY!!!"

Yeah, obviously my thoughts on modern rap are at-leaat-exacerbated by not getting out there and going out of my way to listen to new shit and find the ~1-5% that makes me go full-on Ron Simmons reference, but still despite any and all exposure issues on my end I was just LOLWAT?! and a half when the best rap song I heard in awhile came from a goddamn hamburger helper mixtape! Prolly cuz I consider modern rap a joke so when a song is an actual joke thst happens to be absurdly-funny on the surface + clever when you sink into the cut , yeah, right in my wheelhouse, huh?

I can respect Phish for realizing that their own original compositions are garbage, and that due to this they play a plethora of songs from talented artists.
