I'm not sure that you know how press conferences work.

They didn't take over a press conference. They showed up at the mayor's press conference and provided material that the media who were present, found more newsworthy then they found the mayor. Or anything that the mayor had to say.

Good, protesters need to start attacking the government officials and stop smashing businesses and blocking freeways. Block entrances to the police stations, county/city buildings, etc. Make the government fear its people instead of the other way around.
