I still don't understand the appeal of this show -- this coming from someone who really enjoyed Silvy and Carmen. I realize I am in the far minority on this one. It's not that I don't think Silvy and Waddle are great, but I just don't think they are good together.

Granted, I don't have the opportunity to listen to this show nearly as much as I did to Silvy and Carmen back in the day, but to me, I still get the sense that Waddle and Silvy are not quite comfortable working together.

I won't say that the show is bad, but I just don't see it being anywhere close to MJH level. I still prefer The Show over anything else these days.

You should try listening a little more often, Martin. You'll notice that they are very comfortable working together. Maybe a little too comfortable...

Having been laid up the last week, I've had the chance to listen to them and I do agree with the OP that this show has really gelled and is a good listen.

Martin I don't mean to be one of those people but i will tell you why you feel that way...

because Silvy & Carmen were a partnership, and a friendship, and that's why there was chemistry.

silvy & waddle is an act, and that's because waddle's an act. there is not an ounce of anything genuine coming out of him and it's a real head scratcher because he didn't play the game that way.

he comes off to me as very phony and everything with the "silvy's gay and i'm an alpha male!" just...reeks of focus grouped network executived ssnnyyyerrrgggyyyy...

and it forces silvy to dumb himself down to it...typically, he'll make a great point, and it's followed by waddle making a very predictable "observation" about him as a person, and it's supposed to get a laugh.

i think the show is better than it was when it started but it will never have the heart that silvy & carmen's show had because it will never have the honesty that they did.

Nice observation. I don't listen much but I think there is a little something off about them together. I like Waddle less than I thought I would. You could be right.

I don't know if you had ever listened to Sports Central when Waddle did it with Kaplan, but Waddle was always that way. I don't think its an act.

Actually W_Z, your analysis is dead on. When I wrote my post above, I attempted to explain why I dislike Waddle, but I didn't exactly know how to say it.

Towards the end of Silvy and Carmen, I started to think Silvy was too comfortable with Carmen and needed someone who would challenge him. I would have loved for Silvy to be paired with a Les Grobstein but that's just me.

I disagree with you guys....this show has quickly become my 2nd favorite...I love the "act" that you guys think Waddle is doing...I think thats what makes the show work, even though Waddle is this "alpha male" he still has some "Silvy" in him too that he hates to admit...I dunno Martin and WZ, give it some more time...

I agree with spmack. I have consumed a lot of Waddle's sports personality over the years and I find the alleged act consistent and genuine. He is a guy who does not seem to take himself to seriously and uses false bravado for comedic effect. I think the guy is hilarious and actually like this show better than Silvy and Carm.

It seems to me Waddle is self depreciating and eccentric goofball who, from time to time, injects false bravado into an otherwise genuine personality. It works.

I think Martin's dead on, and I've thought along the same lines. Despite not always being on at great times (Evenings and Sat. mornings), Silvy and Carmen were always a good listen.

Save the Music Saturdays, the "extra, extra" segment...somehow "my wife or my radio partner" or "would you rather" just don't match those Silvy and Carm segments.

Silvy and Waddle seem so much more manufactured, where as Silvy and Carmen had that chemistry that WZ mentioned.

Maybe just needs more time as also mentioned.

I actually like the would you rather and wife/radio partner segments. Yes, Carm & Silvy were a good listen but if I remember correctly people bitched about them and then they were gone and then we had what I would consider the worst radio host in my memory. Well, I don't listen to MNMS so maybe I am off on that one, but, there are no complaints from me from 9-12 or 2-6.... 9-12 keeps getting better IMO....

IMO, Waddly & Silvy have grown into a very good show. I will agree with many of you that the first few months were a little iffy, but I also have to agree with the title of this thread and say they're starting to nip at the heels of MJH (although they still have a ways to go to catch them). They easily are the second best show on this station. I liked listening to Carm & Silvy as well, especially during baseball season with their Cubs / Sox banter. I actually like Carmen when he's filling in on MJH. Ideally, I wouldn't mind seeing Carmen replace Harry (sorry Harry) and groom him to be Mac's replacement.

And by no means and I suggesting that ESPN 1000 should consider any changes to the 9a - noon slot. Many of you really do like the show, and that is the most important thing. I've always liked Silvy as a host (and he's a pretty nice person too from the few times I've met him or spoken with him), so I'm glad he's in a spot where he can be successful.

I've always loved Waddle on The Final Word with Corey. Perhaps, in my opinion, the radio Tom isn't what I'm used to since I'm more familiar with TV Tom.

I don't like the "top ten" thing they do now. I'd rather see them bring back Ten @ Ten even though it might have the Salisbary and Rosembloom stench to it. And I'd like for them to get rid of the weekly Gingrego appearance and have Corey McPheron on in his place.

I agree, Waddle's okay in small doses.

I'll put it this way: would I like to listen to Craig Kilborn talk for 3 hours? Probably not...well, same goes for Waddle, and the two of them are similar in demeanor.

"My wife or radio partner" is incredibly predictable and typically way too easy to win. I think it's gotten old, like Nostratomus.

Has anyone ever seen Kilbourn and Waddle in the same room at the same time?

Waddle spends as much airtime mocking his own concussed self as he does taking shots at Silvy.

The comparison of Waddle and Kilborn is simply not apt. I just don’t get the Waddle hate.

This has been my take on Waddle over the years are well. A pretty genuine, self-deprecating guy who doesn't take himself or sports too seriously. And I don't think Silvy has been forced into a position of subrogation or is dumbing anything down to fit into his "role". I just don't think he's particularly bright...and, IMO, doesn't come off during the show as an especially likable person, either.



I don't think the two are even remotely similar. Kilborn was insufferably smug and smarmy, and as I said above, I think Waddle is the exact opposite.

and that's exactly what i think waddle is...at times. not all the time, but he just seems to cast this "too cool for you" aura around him.

if i had clips i would use them, but waddle just comes off as very smug to me. he has moments of being funny and i'd like to hear more of that from him but for a guy who admits he doesn't catch a lot of the games on TV, he acts like he knows a lot...of course...he'll keep repeating his "i'm a few credits shy of my..." line...i guess that's still supposed to be funny...i don't know.

Zack, I do see your point and how he can come off a little smug at times. I was disappointed at the remote I went to, he did come off a little smug, too cool to say hi to anybody....

I've never met Waddle in person so I will differ to you guys as to how he is in person. I will take in a Tom Waddle and a Marc Silverman when they do lunch with a legend at the new Morton's in Naperville with Naperville legends Sean Payton or Justin McCareins.

That makes at least two of us. I've gotten more insight (and humor) from another concussed Bear (besides Buffone) in Merrill Hoge.
