I came across a couple articles today that made me wonder what is the big picture future of social media. Especially, as it applies and is used by businesses, media/entertainment and politicians. We do not have to look any further than the POTUS or WSCR to see it is presumed to be a valuable and useful tool for their missions.

You can't go any long period of time without seeing a mention of Twitter or Facebook on everything from commercials to the local news. Athletes constantly use it to screw themselves. Bloggers and reporters live off of it. We see every guest that Bernsie has feels compelled to tell us their Twitter handle and of course all the hosts flaunt theirs.

I don't see it useful in these regards long term. What do you all think? Anyway, here are the articles I read showing maybe things will be changing.

Twitter just had their quarterly earnings report today. They reported a net loss in users this quarter. That's a death knell for them. Their earnings went up, but if users continue to drop, the earnings will fall with the change.

Their stock lost 14% on the news and is now worth only a third of what it's value was on the day they had their IPO.

Aren't these all fads? I mean we went from Friendster to Myspace to Facebook to Twitter to Instagram to I have no fucking idea.....

Facebook has grown beyond the point where it's a fad. I say they are established and they are constantly trying to branch out into more. They are looking to even launch their own news service. They (unlike Twitter) have shown to be very profitable.

Twitter will disappear though as they have never shown a profit and are losing users.

Besides, their blue checkmark has turned into a dunce cap.

Facebook has done better since they transformed from college aged kids to people in their 30s and 40s who are less likely to jump from thing to thing. Twitter does not have a hold on that group.

I think FB is here to stay at least for a long while. That have had many users basically store their life there. I will say teens are more insta and snap by my experience but FB bought that or something.

I'm more interested what business will do without twitter. Especially journalists and Bernsie types.

I have 12 years of pictures on Facebook, I'm never deleting my account.

Basically it's not the hip site it was when it was launched and you needed a .edu to register. It was a back deal in 2005 when I was a Freshman at Purdue and everyone got their@purdue.edu e-mail so they could register on Facebook. It's now the site your parents use so the current teen generation doesn't touch it, but that isn't the generation that makes money from advertisers. Facebook owns the 25-49 year old target demo that advertisers crave.

Twitter Prime will fix it. Charge Julie and her ilk $4.99 a month for a checkmark (and "premium, algorithm-based harassment prevention") and call it a day.

i had started on Friendster in 2003, and then migrated to MySpace in 2005. i heard of Facebook around 2006, and some college girl where i worked raved about it. i think they thought they were part of some cool club or something by using it. And it was the cooler thing to use than MySpace because *everybody* was on MySpace. I joined Facebook in 2009. MySpace took a huge nosedive by that time, and Facebook prospers.

Twitter has always seemed to be some Basketcase siamese twin mutant of social media. it's dumbed down American culture; and what's worse, people now depend on it for news. it's ridiculous.

I would hardly call anything that has lasted 13 years a "fad."

I use Twitter constantly. It's the main vehicle I use to get my news, correspond with golf companies and golf fans, and it has allowed me to network with numerous people who have helped my blogging career.

That being said, without Twitter seriously addressing their trolling issue -- which is rampant and extreme -- they will implode.

I would argue that Twitter offers more "real news" than anything on CNN, FOX, or MSNBC.

As long as you trust the "news" you follow is unbiased and legit.

I would argue the opposite. Twitter is what has destroyed journalism as the blue checkmarks care more about getting it out first than getting it out accurately. It has literally led to the proliferation of fake news and false reporting.

Contrast that to the old school journalists who would rather get it right than get it 1st.
