I take issue with how the Obama administration/congressional Dems negotiated against themselves, thinking it could be so pragmatic and reasonable on its own that [Russia, Iran, etc.] would stand in awe of their pragmatism and compromise and agree to everything straight-up

That was the foreign policy too.

pragmatism to the extreme puts all solutions on equal footing. most extreme pragmatists i know have the attitude of "whatever works for you" but thats not always the best. science can't compete with extreme pragmatism.

This isn't science and of course all ideas aren't equal. Occasionally even I find out things I believed was wrong. Being unwilling to consider the ideas of others is foolish.

A perfect example right now where compromise and pragmatism could work is corporate tax reform. The Dems are basically ok with a 25-28% rate, and the Republicans stand at 15-20%. This contrasts with the current 35% rate. Both sides recognize that we are uncompetitive in that regard and that our global tax system is unique among major countries. Trillions in corporate cash are parked overseas because of that system. But it is getting hung up on stupid things with how to treat passthroughs and taxing private equity carried interest.

Passthroughs were created to get around the high corporate tax rate and double taxation. But since they were first created, the qualified dividend rate is much lower (20% or less), and in tandem with a lower corporate rate, we wouldn't need S Corps anymore.

Progress is the name of the game. Over time people will buy into your ideas if they get to see them in action.
