I was hoping for a little more of Mac timewise but this is good. Letterman and Danny Mac announce comebacks on the same day.

So the average RMPN show gets 4500 monthly listeners. I sincerely hope that's someone quoting actual plays instead of the oft-quoted "feed hits" used in promotions.

If he could lay of the pills, Mac would still be making 30K a month at the Score. Now he gets a Podcast with 4K listeners a month.

Radio Misfits would be a perfect Danny Mac standalone podcast, and originally that's what I thought the website was,. But now seeing that it's a "network" Getting 90K plays a month (or, in Ogie terms, less than 15% of a single PMT episode, which drop thrice weekly)...ok, I guess. Mac is immediately the biggest player at that joint, unless Artie Lange actually does do a regular show there and promotes it.

In sports talk alone? Jonah Kerri comes to mind, I remember he was riding the wave as one of the top iTunes podcasts, coming from a radio background. Bill Simmons is in the Top 10 of sports podcasts on iTunes presently, and he had a radio gig as I recall. Also, a handful of the Top 30 on the iTunes charts are the podcast versions of sports-talk radio shows, in part because their multi-episode daily (for each hour, let's say) format helps game the iTunes algorithm.

As far as talk/hot talk, Carolla is obviously the vanguard, and Mac has a curious mix of interests that could make a talk show formatted podcast from him worth a subscription.

But in reality no one really profits from podcasting that much, right?

I think Carolla and Maron are the biggest and they basically use their podcasts to promote their live shows or tv gigs.

There's definitely money to be made podcasting. The "they only use podcasting to promote their actual revenue streams" idea comes mainly from people having a very basic understanding of Google AdSense payouts and applying those figures to publicly available listener figures for podcasts.

For instance, AdSense payouts are usually in the $1-2 per 1K impressions (CPM) range, almost never going higher than $4 CPM. So, if people assume a favorable AdSense rate of $2 CPM for Carolla, and apply that to a daily episode download total of 250K, people (erroneously) calculate that he's making no more than $500-750 an episode, or $2500-3750 weekly, from which he has to pay for hosting, equipment and utilities, his producers, Gina, Brian, and keep whatever he can for himself. It just doesn't look profitable...IF you assume he's using AdSense to sell advertisements.

He's not, Maron is not, none of the top guys are, and not even all of the mid-level guys are. Carolla has an ad-sales team, probably now in partnership with Podcast One, where just like a radio station, there are bullpens of sales people working the phones to sell space on Ace Man's show. In that space, $35+ CPM's for a single ad roll are not unheard of, and once you begin applying those figures to his listener numbers, you're talking At least $20K a week in ad revenue from a single ad slot.

Juice thanks for insight. Any idea as far positioning or income with these guys to be on Podcast One as opposed to say Bill Burr pretty much doing is own thing and reads on his own app? I'll hang up and listen for your answer.

Hmm. I thought Carolla himself said things of that nature.

Interesting. Id love to see what they make strictly from podcasting.

Going it alone like the JRE or Bill Burr can cut down on overhead, because content networks like PodcastOne and ad-sales services like MidRoll will take a percentage of revenue for their services. Employing your OWN ad-sales team increases control over what you advertise, how often you advertise, and the like, but it also might increase the chances that you have to fill space with a filler ad, or that your team won't have the connections to bring on NAPA Auto Parts or Comcast, and you'll be stuck doing Blue Apron and Nature Box reads ad infinitum.

I remember guests on the Carolla's show saying things like that when promoting their once-in-awhile podcasts (Jay Mohr, Jo Koy, etc.), but Carolla's venture has had an eye towards revenue generation since day one. I mean, does he even go on the road with standup anymore? They're promoting a ton of Carolla-sponsored events, but that's got to be extra revenue at best and at worst grass roots promotion, because there's no way a Loxi Barcrawl is paying for Ace Man to take Newman's race car to Laguna Seca.

Well, he's got the Spike money, the book money. Seems he does live shows quite a bit. So that's like half and half.

Made some money on real estate too, I think

despite what MANY here would like to be true, being on a podcast does not count as "coming back".

Except every single one of the people that appear on the podcast (save for guests) is pulling down either a salary of a portion of Carolla's/the show's earnings. There are two producers, a sound guy/announcer, and two other talents making a full-time commitment and getting compensated, only after which can Ace Man take his profits to the bank. The show has got to at least be self-sufficient, and that require hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue a year.

Im not arguing with you. Carolla saying it himself could very well be part of his "every man who works super hard" schtick.

You make solid points. Im sure it's profitable. He probably couldnt live off of it though. At least not the lifestyle he leads.

I'm not entirely sure about that, and not just because of my bar napkin revenue math. But Carolla seemed quick to agree to a settlement with the patent trolls, perhaps because a judgment might make all the evidence introduced at trial--like revenue, listenership, etc.--and it stands to reason that he wouldn't want people figuring out how much he makes from podcasting when he was begging for money from listeners to take on the trolls.

when Mac joined the Dr. Ken podcast, I got the impression he knew he wouldn't see the big money and was prepared to make some lifestyle adjustments.

This could be temporary or used as a step to something else down the road. I will give it a try...if Harry joins on a regular basis...I'm out.

Some of the most successful podcasts are short ones. Its not radio. Even Carolla's 90 minutes daily is on the high end.
