This movie fucked me up as a kid. When I got older, I realized 90% of spiders are there to help get rid of other bugs. MANY harmful spiders don't even live in the Midwest.

it was on last night too but the sound was totally fucked up.

one of the best horror comedies of all time. how they were able to make small monsters big was unique. i remember siskel saying he didn't think it would work because they're just "little spiders" but gave credit to how it was shot and how the atmosphere totally owned. plus, the added humor of goodman was the perfect touch.

as much as i hate spiders, i love this movie.

I used to have it (not the film; the phobia), but I did write a kick-ass personal essay on it once

I'm live and let live but when I walk out the door in the morning and the fucker has a web built on the porch right at head level... I'm tearing it down and smashing him. Take that shit to the side of the house. The worst is the dumb asses in the shower. I'm gonna let it live and then the fucker starts crawling closer and closer to my feet. Too close ya bad hombre, now you're headed down the drain.

I worked part time at a movie theater when this came out. Long before the internet and instant information so people would call the theater and ask what was playing and at what times.

Every single time we would tell the caller, "Arachnophobia", it was always replied with a "What?!?" What is that?!?". So we would have to repeatedly answer the same questions day after day. It was really starting to gnaw at us and take its toll. This was probably the most common call...

CUSTOMER: What the hell is Arachnophobia?!?
GODFELLA: It's the fear of spiders, ma'am.
CUSTOMER: Well, why didn't they just call it that?!?
GODFELLA: I don't know ma'am, I didn't make the movie.

We had an 80 year old cranky woman working in the ticket booth (she literally worked there part time off and on since high school). Well, when she found out the movie was held over another week, she lost it. It went something like this...

80: Thank you for calling the theater. Can I help you?
CALLER: What's playing tonight at 7?
80: "Arachnophobia" starts at 7:15, sir.
CALLER: What's playing at 7:15?!?
80: (Screaming at the top of her lungs in full Bernstein): "AAHH-RRAACCKK-NNAAHH-FFOOEE-BBEE-YYAAHH!!!!!"
(Slams the phone down repeatedly)

The entire crowded lobby went silent and then erupted in laughter.

She retired one week later.

I felt spiders crawling all night last night. Not sure if it was the movie or the meth.

I can somehow see this still happening at the Waunee theater in Kewanee. Sometimes I like going to that one and the Apollo in Princeton as it reminds me of being a kid. Still pitchblack when the movie is showing. Was glad they were somehow scrape together the funds to go digital.
