It might have taken a decade or four, but hip-hop and R&B finally reign supreme in the U.S.

Together, they now comprise the dominant musical genre in the country, beating out rock for the first time, according to a new mid-year report out of Nielsen, a global information company that tracks ratings around the country.

Nielsen, which has been tracking music patterns since 1992, looked at physical and digital album sales as well as audio and video streams to create its ranking for the first half of 2017. Altogether, hip-hop and R&B claimed about 25 percent of the market compared to rock, which came in second at 23 percent.

The reason for hip-hop and R&B overtaking rock is simple: online streaming. When it comes to album sales, rock continues to dominate, claiming 43 percent of physical album sales and 37 percent of digital album sales. But R&B and hip-hop have come to utterly dominate the online streaming market, where they make up 29 percent of all songs streamed online ― that’s almost the exact same amount as rock and pop combined.

Now, it’s possible that rock could return to its predominant spot in the future. The hip-hop and R&B genre was helped by the release of more than a few dominant albums between January and June, like Drake’s “More Life,” Migos’ “Culture,” Future’s “Future” and Kendrick Lamar’s “Damn,” among others.

Drake, in particular, had a notable couple months, breaking his own record for on-demand streaming in a single week with 385 million.

I could see being tired of him, he is kinda everywhere.


But he has 3 albums that I really enjoy and is good on features, so I can not be counted among the Enough Chance the Rapper! crowd

He's got me doing front flips to PTB when he comes on. Fuck Chance. He's like a poor xerox of Kanye.

Ive spent a good amount of time driving around a team of 9-10 year old softball players for 2 years.

Id prefer to expose them to real hip hop, but parents frown on the vulgarity

"May I Have This Dance" is a really good song but I don't understand what makes Chance the Rapper a great rapper above all others. Is it just that he's from Chicago?

He is certainly not above all other rappers despite what some magazines say. He's a good rapper but a great PR guy and super fan friendly.


Acid Rap is a great album (mixtape) and he seems very genuine (like I believe he believes what he's saying and rapping about...not always true)

There is but the type of Rap they would like is full of vulgarity

I don't listen to rap, but he seems to be everywhere. Meeting with Rauner, getting pissy at the Sox, just all over the place. He seems like he could be an alright dude, but I think he gets way too much coverage because he's Chicago's own.

I like the White Sox hats he designed. That's a pretty talented young man. Also, walks the walk with his wallet. Speaks out on issues and writes the check to back it up. I bet he would also buy drinks IRL. #Respect.

I would also say he's at that perfect intersection of the line of poppy radio hits with real lyrics that are moderately thought-provoking

So he gets the young ones who like Future (say 2 prescription drug names, repeat 80 times to the beat) and us old hip hop nerds who put a premium on lyrics
