Bears signed LT Charles Leno to a four-year, $38 million extension through 2020.
A 2014 seventh-round pick, Leno has started 29-of-32 games the past two seasons. He was Pro Football Focus' No. 53 tackle out of 76 qualifiers last season after checking in at 49-of-76 the previous year. The Bears see upside in the soon-to-be 26-year-old and keep in tact the left side of their line. At $9.5 million per year, Leno is the league's 14th-highest-paid left tackle.

surprised by this, i dont think he's very good.

He's the type of player they should always be looking to upgrade from

All that matters is the guaranteed money. This could very easily be a deal where the Bears win big and lock him up cheap if he breaks out or just cut him with no ramifications if he looks like shit.

Now if they are giving him a fat amount of bonus money they won't be able to dump at a moment's notice I'll be a little confused.

Bears close to contract extension with left tackle Charles Leno

The Bears are trying to stabilize their ofensive line for their quarterbacks of now and the future, and they extended the blind-side protector Wednesday.

A league source tells PFT the Bears are close to a contract extension with left tackle Charles Leno.

The deal is reportedly worth $38 million over four years, with $21.5 million in guarantees.

Leno has become a solid piece for the Bears, who have invested in free agents Bobby Massie and Josh Sitton the last two offseasons in an effort to shore up their front line.

The former seventh-round pick from Boise State was entering the final year of his rookie deal.

He's not Joe Thomas, but he's not J'Marcus Webb, either. He's fine. I guess it's better to secure something rather than looking for a tackle and winding up with Bushrod.

Yeah, I thought that the tackle combo of Leno/Massie was one of the worst in the league.

This is kind of like the Glennon thing where they paid double his market value.

Oh well, I'm not gonna let it bother me too much. I suppose that you could do much worse than Charles Leno.

You know, after every Bears game last year, as shitty as they were, in no game particular was I thinking left tackle was a problem. He's a decent, young player.

According to Pro Football Focus, Leno and Massie were both below average in pass protection, and horrendous in run-blocking.

But maybe they think Leno has enough upside to justify that type of investment. In any case, I'd advise that they use their 2018 top pick on an offensive tackle.

I suppose if they actually stumble upon a tackle who's really good it'd be possible for Leno to move over to the right side. Still dont really understand this.

$21 mildo guaranteed for a 7th round pick who would be on most teams' practice squads, if even that. Virginia must like his heart.

True, but as fans, we're not taking notice of a lot of shit that's going on in the trenches. I only turn my attention to Leno if there is an obvious fuck-up. PFF is a valuable scouting service.

There is no doubt he would be scooped up by someone and most likely as a starter should he have hit free agency after this year.

He's a young, durable, middle of the road LT.

I get why you would try to paint a rosy picture here but he's bad. Not close to middle of the road

Leno has been very good this year. The contract looks like a savy move. Once again, I'm right.

Bump. Leno has been one of the better left tackles in football this year.

My barometer for a football move is usually gauged by FavreFan. If FF hates it, pretty sure it's a good move.

It's almost like he set a delayed-fuse on all his head-scratching moves to suddenly become genius acquisitions just this year. Some guys like Sims or White are still bums but holy shit if he didn't suddenly build himself one hell of a team all of a sudden.

Mack is obviously the star in the middle and makes he whole thing go, but he has a good cast around him.

Even White looks like he could turn into Dennis McKinnon. Not what you want from a 1st round pick, but still a useful piece.

and even White and Simms are erased after this year with that money becoming useful. Meanwhile better versions of White and Simms are already on the team in spades so their money get reallocated to another position.

I think that he drafted in 2017 for a different coach.

Leonard Floyd will fool you because he hasn't been there on the sacks, but he has been very good this year. If you actually look at him as a linebacker who's main jobs are to cover and stop the run he's been well worth a 1st round pick.
