The other night I wanted to watch Skyfall, so I assumed I could either stream it as part of my subscriptions to Netflix, Amazon Video, or Xfinity On Demand, OR be able to rent it via one of those services for a rental fee of $4 or $5. Much to my disappointment, the ONLY option through those services was to PURCHASE at around $15.

After looking into it further, it appears many movies are like this...not included in the services I'm paying for (I understand certain movies come and go from time to time), but also not available for rental (unless I go to one of the few remaining brick and mortar places that may still have the DVD, or order the DVD through Netflix and wait three days for it to come in the mail). What gives?

I don't do that much but I noticed more PPV movies on xfinity are like this. Buy can't rent.

I notice it's like that if the movies are available before they're released on DVD. Then you can rent.

I haven't noticed it with old movies.

For the record, Skyfall is on in 2 weeks. I get the desire to watch something based upon your mood but I just find it funny that the idea of renting it from Family Video is too much trouble.

I'm not sure I've rented a movie in 15 years from a store.

I get that. It's just that if you are hankering for a specific title, renting from an actual store isn't really that much of a hardship.

No, I get that. It was more of a realization how it was once such a huge part of my weekends walking around the video store with my future wife i n the old "I dunno, what do you wanna watch?" cycle. Got me wondering if I still have a membership at Family Video or if they even still do them.

On the occasions when I do wander a video store without a specific title in mind it usually just reinforces that most movies are crap.

There's a free app called "JustWatch." You can search for a title and it tells you what platform (Netflix" Amazon" etc.) it's available on. You can also set what platforms you have and search that way. It's not perfect, but I find it helpful on those nights where I'm trying to find something to watch.

i had a similar experience with Dirty Dancing a month or so ago. I never had watched it but always wanted to watch it. Looked and looked for it and it was not even available to buy. I think TNT had it a few weeks ago and I was able to see it there.

Other than the music, terrible movie. Not sure what all the hype was about after all these years.

There are some old war movies I want to watch, but the only way is on British DVD players.

I feel your pain. I tried to rent Casino Royale on demand on Saturday and ran across the same issue.
