I have a friend that does some local standup comedy that is trying to convince me to try it. She thinks I'm funny, but I know that I'll be a neurotic mess on the stage and completely bomb. Should I give it a shot? How many beers is the right amount to calm my nerves for this?

I don't know, I'm 46 and figure "WTF, why not?" I apologai in advance if anyone ever has to endure witnessing it.

A friend did this last weekend. He was on for 8 minutes. First 5 were funny. Then he died a slow death for the last 3.

I have been on stage in my youth. I shared the stage with a pre-famous Arsenio Hall...true story. It was some dive bar on Belmont in Chicago. It was about 40 years ago and the crowd loved me.

So I tried it again on a Monday night. The 5 people there looked at me like I told them I ran over their dog. I quickly said to myself "screw this" and never tried it again. I prepared nothing both nights,btw.

i did it for 6 months straight, 2-3 nights a week in the city and south burbs. make sure you have 3-5 minutes of material and go from there.

before going on stage, take a deep breath and try to block out noise. don't engage hecklers unless you know how.

once you've done it one time, and you get through it, it gets easier.
