Rivera is the definition of a veterean replacement backup catcher. Better than the Koyie Hill level, but somebody you only want catching once every 4-5 games. Avila can't hit lefties worth shit, so they're going to need a third catcher in September so they can pinch hit LaStella or Almora for Avilla in key situations.

That's a good take.

I think the Cubs hang on to the division and the Cards or Brewers take out the D'Backs for a WC spot.

9:05pm: The Cubs still aren’t willing to meet the Tigers’ asking price, per David Kaplan of CSN Chicago (via Twitter). Chicago is believed to be the only team willing to take on most or all of Verlander’s salary, per ESPNChicago.com’s Jesse Rogers (Twitter link), though indications remain that a deal is not likely at this late stage.

Had to give up 3 top 20 prospects to get him. I'm good with Theo Hoyer not doing that.

#Cubs had been Verlander's first choice. He wanted to let that play out as long as possible. He agreed to #Astros deal at final minute. @MLB

Well, it will be interesting where and how the Cubs getting pitching now. Lester, Q, and Hendrick are locks. Then you have 2 question marks, maybe Monty, eh. Not looking good

Tigers had to be asking for MLB players from the Cubs.

If the Cubs were willing to eat most of Verlander's salary, then Tigers couldn't have asked for too much. I'm glad the Cubs didnt get Verlander. If you want a veteran pitcher making oodles of cash, sign Arrieta.

True, a bunch of them are on the ML team (the obvious goal) or were used to acquire other valuable talent.

Verlander is great but very beatable. Does not have a good ERA in playoff games

Don't the Cubs have some MLB players to move?

If they are committed to Schwarber as a full time OF, which it appears so, there are too many cooks in the kitchen. Zobrist has two years left, Happ, Heyward, Russell, Baez, Almora, etc.

Nobody wants Zo or anything like that, but you only have 8 positional players on the field at one time. This was the time to take all of the Verlander contract and make the deal Schwarber and a live AA arm.

Houston gave up three prospects, but maybe the Cubs could have given fewer players but more money.

Very important for the pom pom waving cubbie media to push the narrative that even though he was traded to another team, he really wanted to be a cubbie
