Dr. Ken has a point though, the parent(s) being there does make an impression on MANY judges. Especially in what I assume is a smaller county.

My brother-in-law forgot to put on his license plate sticker. So he and my niece were going somewhere and my 20 year old niece was driving his car. She got pulled over for the sticker and my brother-in-law actually thought he could take the ticket. He kept arguing with the cop that it was his car. The cop eventually had to tell him to shut up. He got out of the car to follow the cop as he was going to write the ticket. The cop got furious and told him to get back in the car. My brother-in-law wouldn't listen. He's lucky he didn't find himself face down and in handcuffs.

That is the sense I have gotten around here. Being there does make an impression. She will have to speak and handle her own problems. I want her to have to pay a fine. She needs to deal with the consequences of her actions. But I also do not want her getting screwed in the long run on points on her license and insurance rates going thru the roof.

What do you suppose it would cost to have Ditka stand next to me and do a CFRCast promo?

25/30 years ago when I was living in the civilized world and had my own business, I had to deal with a lot of lawyers and court proceedings.

Long story short, back then and I think it's still true now, judges really do care how respectful you are to them and the court.

I witnessed many judges complimenting families and minors on dressing nicely (tie/suit) and actually saying it helps them in their case.

If you come in there dressed like you're going to the mall vs the other side dressed in business suits, they're going to get the advantage.

Seems so arbitrary but judges really do put respecting the court and the system on a very high pedestal.

My son was 16 and got in a pretty bad accident that was his fault per the police report. It was probably his fault.

The police told us to go to the mandatory court proceeding (since he was under 18), make sure he was dressed nicely and both parents were there.

We did that. He looked good in his tie and the judge dismissed all charges.

yea, but not often. I've picked up a few traffic cases along the way. It's usually people who are concerned about having a conviction on their record or have lots of tickets in the past. Or someone who is way over the speed limit and is worried about getting dinged with a huge fine and penalties.

You will always do better in traffic court with an attorney. They've got enough cases on the docket that its really no big deal to give a sweetheart deal to the 5-6 people there who have lawyers. Now, whether that better deal is worth the $500 its going to cost you for the lawyer is an entirely different matter and totally subjective.

The last time I got a ticket was about 25 years ago. Apparently I rolled a stop sign in some unincorporated area of the Mecca. I thought it was weird to have a village cop issue tickets in an unincorporated area as usually Cook County Services those locales.

In any case, I show up to that court house in Rolling Meadows by Arlington Park. I rolled the stop sign, so I have no clue why I went to court. The cop actually showed up. The most notable thing is that the judge was blind. He was sitting with his back pretty much facing the court room. The cop explained that folks had been rolling or ignoring that sign, and the residents had been complaining. There were about ten people who showed up for the same violation. I knew I was good when the judge chided the first person and then proceeded to dismiss the ticket. I got off free and clear.

The cop will show up 95% of the time so if you're banking on the cop not being there that isn't the best strategy. It's a paid day off for them, all they have to do is come to court and sit there shooting the shit for a couple hours. Cops love the days they have court.
