Does anyone really believe this tax was enacted to promote better health? It was enacted so the greedy politicians would have more money to divy up for themselves. They voted themselves a bunch of raises just after voting for this tax in fact. So tired of the bullshit commercials to try to convince people that it was all for the public good. Yeah, just like the red light cameras......who ya crappin?

Did it really take 6 weeks to come up with that blistering take? Maybe you should try calling that one in to Mac's new podcast

The commercials airing regularly to try to convince people that this tax was not born of greed are airing regularly and they were the inspiration. By the way, Dan's podcast does not incorporate phone calls, but will be utilizing emails sent to him.

Those commercials do indeed suck...and I love how they point out that rich fucker Bloomberg is the one funding this shit.

And I don't care what the podcast is incorporating...I enjoyed the first episode, and hope he severely limits listener contributions...

I wish one of the anti-soda tax commercials would just flat out put it this way (and this argument is true)...

"Greedy Cook County politicians claim the new soda tax is for the health of our children. Why, then, do people on SNAP, EBT, or Link cards not have to pay the tax? If it is about health, shouldn't those that are the most in need of help be using those funds to pay for healthy alternatives?"

In actuality, the politicians do not want state funds to subsidize the soda tax, hence why SNAP, EBT, and Link recipients are not subject to paying the soda tax.

It wasn't Preckwinkle's decision...federal law forbids taxing SNAP purchases.

Preckwinkle wanted it to be a strictly wholesale tax, so it wouldn't look like a tax to the consumer but that McDonald's suddenly raised their soft drink price from $1.00 to $1.32 or $1.49. But there was some sort of sales tax issue about that, something about the sales tax on the increased price being illegal if all the retailer was doing was passing it along.

It's not a good analogy on the airplane but future generations will view how much sugar we consume the same way we look at how much smoking previous generations did.

It won't look as cool when the Mad Men-style period pieces of the 2000s are basically just fat people drinking soda, posting on myspace and listening to Beyonce.

I've become partial to G2 Glacier Freeze. One of these days I'll try putting some vodka in it.

That's some good stuff right there.

I've froze it to get to a slush and added the vodka....good summer drink.

The only reason it's bullshit is because it doesn't tax sugar as a commodity. Soda isn't the problem, the sugar in it is.
