Yea, top bid is $100,100 and hopefully whoever it is will just release it.

Credit to Rza, it was a novel idea but it backfired.

The questions and answers are funny.

Is that a real listing?

I believe so...his responses certainly are in line with his style.

I'd say the only thing that really needs limits is gas. Make the rule that you can only charge a dollar over what the maximum price you charged for gasoline in the past two years. A scenario where all gas in Florida costs $45 a gallon today would make things much worse.

But if their cost is 40/gallon you can't cap what they charge or they just won't provide any.

oh, you think that sale price is based on cost

In some cases, yes.

Who would you go after? The manufacturer? The wholesaler? The distributor? The retailer?

If I'm trying to evacuate from a damn hurricane I'll pay the $40/gallon. Better than no gas at all.

FF's statement is true. Some of these people live in a world that doesn't exist. I'd love it too if we could artificially suppress prices in times like these, but it's simply impossible without repercussions. Sometimes they think just because something seems humane that it MUST be possible.

I have no problem with the government paying for these things at market value and giving them to those in need, but they can't simply tell suppliers what they can and cannot charge.

The argument becomes a bit different when talking about patent laws and things like that. That little weasel who charges a billion dollars for AIDS medication should be taken to a firing squad.

Why draw the line for medication? Their research and development is the reason the drug exists. Why shouldn't they be able to set the market?

That normally is true. In the case of the weasel or other old medicine/patent raiders not true.

Why penalize them because the government didn't make the investment?

Not following.

Leash and others believe that the market should dictate prices but want the government to step in for drugs. I don't think you can have it both ways. Drug dealers profits are just as important as the insurance company's if you don't agree with market controls.

That's not what I said. My point is more in regards to patents, which are monopolies (though a needed monopoly in many cases).

at $40/gallon eveybody gets their 5 gallons enough to GTFO instead of only the first 20% fillin up and laughing all the way to Georgia.

From Hurricane Katrina:

John Shepperson was one of the "gougers" authorities arrested. Shepperson and his family live in Kentucky. They watched news reports about Katrina and learned that people desperately needed things.

Shepperson thought he could help and make some money, too, so he bought 19 generators. He and his family then rented a U-Haul and drove 600 miles to an area of Mississippi that was left without power in the wake of the hurricane.

He offered to sell his generators for twice what he had paid for them, and people were eager to buy. Police confiscated his generators, though, and Shepperson was jailed for four days for price-gouging. His generators are still in police custody.

So did the public benefit?

I wonder how that gouging ordinance was worded and why it was in place ahead of time.

He would have been better off charging triple the price and letting the authorities "wet their beak" a little.

That seems a little bit strange for price gouging. You don't need a generator to survive after a hurricane.

I do have to laugh at the "thought he could help" line. Yeah, I'm sure that he felt good with a 100% markup to people that had just lost everything.

Anybody who lives in a hurricane zone and doesn't keep their tank having at least 8 gallons worth of gas in it from August 1-December 15 is an idiot.

That being said, you're likely to only get 10 mpg thanks to all the congestion on the freeways.

You better sharpen up this mult or I might change the password and give it to someone who can do something with it.

The minimum guaranteed income is almost a certainty eventually. It's just a question of when it happens. I'm sure you'll complain about it though because it will hurt businesses but let people feed, clothe, and shelter themselves.

The redistribution of wealth is usually couched as some sort of benefit for the poor, when actually it's a benefit for the wealthy and ultimately a necessary pillar with which to keep a society stable.

Here's an interesting conversation about the topic. (The entire thing is interesting but I doubt most are willing to spend nearly three hours on it.) The pertinent part starts at 1:45.
