Most starts (min 5 IP) allowing 1 or 0 runs
2016-17
28 Jon Lester #Cubs
24 Max Scherzer #Nationals
23 Clayton Kershaw #Dodgers

Way to set a high bar

There will come a time in baseball where IP on a starter and reliever will be indistinguishable. Starters will simply be the guys who throw the first 3-4 innings of a game.

"there will come a time" sounds like it's far off.

I could see it by 2020

I don't think that will work over 162 game season. You're always going to need a few guys to carry the load. I do think the 5 man roatation will go away and teams will go with 3-4 starters with bullpen days mixed in.

I see 6 starters becoming normal sooner than bullpen days or bullpen innings matching starter innings.

Splitting a 4 game series on the road was just fine. Especially after dropping the first pair and having to face Cole in the 3rd game. A 5 game lead in the division is not as substantial as fans might prefer, but the lead is starting to feel more comfortable. As far as the discussion about pitching, starters are still the best pitchers and that is why you want them throwing the most innings and pay them far more. having a 6 man rotation on a team with older starters and guys who are average starters is fine. But if you have guys like Kershaw, Arrieta, or Gerrit Cole, having a 6th pitcher means they will have fewer starts in a season. Last year, with Lester, Arrieta and Hendricks throwing great most of the season (and Hammel as well, in the first half) it would have been stupid to have a 6th starter all season. It made sense to insert a 6th starter late in the season, in order to get them all a bit of extra rest, to be fresher for the playoff run. But would have been a stupid idea for the whole season.
