I think we do this thread like once a year but he's the only guy outside of George Carlin you can call the GOAT. World's never been deprived of a greater talent so soon

He's great. I think slightly overrated. Would still be in my top 5. At their best, nobody was better than Bill Hicks.

George Carlin scoffs at this thread.

On Richard Pryor 's behalf as well.

Bill Hicks and Chris Rock wouldn't claim to be in their class. But still great

The only thing Bill Hicks lacks is longevity(which isn't insignificant). It'd be like if an illness claimed Jordan in '87 or Gretzky in '83.

Chris Rock was/is great. He's not as good as Bill Hicks on his best day.

There is a difference between social commentary and comedy. Guys like Carlin are great social commentators. Hicks is also a social commentator (though not a great one). I have never listened to Bill Hicks and laughed. I have rarely listened to Carlin and laughed (though Carlin did make me think). Some of these guys are luminaries, but they're not comedians. Hicks is neither.

Lenny Bruce, Dick Gregory and Redd Foxx were better as well.

Bill Hicks was a comic, through and through. Saying otherwise is just a bad contrarian take for the sake of it.

Bernie Mac and Sam Kinison were better, short lived comics

Completely disagree but that's an understandable point. "Bill Hicks was not a comedian" is not.

I think there's some confusion. I was replying to leash saying this:

Quote:

I read that as "Bill Hicks is not a comedian". That's an objectively wrong and subjectively bad take.

I like Bernie Mac a lot and think Kinison is overrated from what I've heard, but I don't have any problem with someone saying they are better than Bill Hicks. I just disagree.

Dennis Leary stole his whole act from Hicks

Hicks said he was gonna quit smoking to see if Leary would quit too.

The more current version of that is Joe Rogan calling Carlos Mencia out on stage. Just priceless.

Classic. And credit to Rogan for continually resisting the bait to hit him (Mencia repeatedly calling him a bitch)

I'm sure he would have loved to go all UFC on him

Schumer is a fuckin thief too. And Jay Mohr...sadly.

hicks, bruce, carlin, and pryor are pretty much the mount rushmore of standup comedy. standup comedy is about pushing boundaries, and nobody pushed them better than those 4.

i have a personal bias with hicks, because no one fucking talked about the guy until after he died. i followed him in the late 80's when i was a kid, watching "the comedy channel", through the early 90's and his explosion in 1993. i remarked to my dad, "you need to watch him. he's the next carlin". then he dropped dead. it was such a robbery.

kinison was an absolute firework on stage, but he was more of a presence than anything else. he spoke a lot of truths, but it was his lit-wick-to-cannon fire that stood out.

hicks was a masseuse of language, and a listener. that's what puts him in the picture with pryor, carlin and bruce. all of them were like that. they were a real force.

i actually think lenny bruce gets the least amount of love because he is so far removed from modern comedy, i don't think later generations can appreciate what he did. but he was arrested for his act. that's pretty hardcore.

One of the best sketch comedians ever but his stand-up usually leaves me cold. Maybe he's gotten better but his act from the Bush years was unfortunate, at least compared to what he did on Mr. Show.
