He is up there but gone too soon. Like Mitch Hedberg.

If I were to pretend to be Bill Simmons before he lost it, I would make some half-assed analogy to Gayle Sayers and probably throw Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin in there too as they quit doing stand-up at an early age.

Bill Hicks is the go to for wannabe edgy free thinking white guys. Most comedians think he's a hack, and I tend to agree. Norm MacDonald usually goes out of his way to bring him up for being unfunny.

Over my time on earth,I have watched just about every type of comic out there. From guys like Hicks and Mort Sahl to guys like Ray Romano & yes,Kevin James.

The thing is after a guy cracks a joke or witty observation,I don't want to nod my head and say "ahh, yes, that's true." I want to laugh my ass off. That's where guys like James come in.

I think there's some confusion. I was replying to leash saying this:

Some of these guys are luminaries, but they're not comedians. Hicks is neither.

I read that as "Bill Hicks is not a comedian". That's an objectively wrong and subjectively bad take.

I like Bernie Mac a lot and think Kinison is overrated from what I've heard, but I don't have any problem with someone saying they are better than Bill Hicks. I just disagree.

Can you ever just explain why you disagree rather than saying someone is "objectively wrong"?

I mean... really? I really need to explain to you why saying Bill Hicks wasn't a comedian is simply wrong?

Man Nicks is in top 5 for me. I just wish he was here now. I have like 3 bootlegs of his stuff, his raw energy comes through still. You can tell his preacher background by the way he projects.
Top 5 in no order
Carlin
Hicks
Black
Murphy
The Jim Jeffries(until he sold out by losing the accent) and Tom Segura

If you like Hicks, Carlin, Gervais, etc., you'll love Mike Warnke.
Hilarious.

Jim Jeffries had the potential to be an all-time great. Some of his early shows are amazing. His Netflix special was so bad, though. He tries to be edgy now by making fun of Americans and Trump too much. That's not edgy.

My Mount Rushmore of comedians is Carlin, Dangerfield, Rock and......Gallagher??

hicks had his moments. for me though what was the saddest was that after reading parts of his book, Bill hicks the "hate everything" guy was changing and i thought its possible you'd begin to get the best part of him if he hadn't died of cancer.

because when i listen to hicks now, i just hear a sad hopeless figure. when i was a kid of course i was like, YEAH F EVERYONE WHO IS STUPID!! he was the cooler hip Nietschze of our time.

This might seem like it's coming out of left field, but the best standup comedian that I've ever seen in person would be Chris Tucker. He went for like 90 minutes at the casino in Hammond. Words can not describe how excellent he was.

My favorites would be Carlin, Hicks, Chappelle, Rock, Tucker, and Tommy Davidson. Bruce and Pryor were before my time, I can't relate to much of what they're saying. My favorite obscure comedian is Steve White. He was in a number of Spike Lee flicks, people would recognize him if they saw him.
