I saw a customer abuse their dog the other day.
He hurt his Alaskan Husky puppy twice... lifted it up by the scruff or neck twice. I mean off the ground. You can't do that with dogs.
She yelped and whined and put her tail between her legs whenever he returned to the room she was in.
He did it because she walked on his carpeted floor.
Would you report an animal abuser if you saw it while working in a customer home?

Alaskan Husky pup? Maybe 2 years old. Super adorable.
I'm not a dog guy but I can't see people putting animals in pain and handle it ok.
I was pretty ticked off.

I would say something right there... probably ask if they thought they were properly equipped for the responsibility of having a pet. People who abuse animals are pieces of shit.

I know it's your livelihood, but yes I would have either said something or called someone who could have done something.

Yeah, I know it's easier said than done when it's your job. Infuriating, though.

That's no puppy at two but yeah, lifting from scruff is a bit much, more telling is the cowering. We've had three dogs come in that were abused before we got them and I always felt bad for them. The shepherd/husky mix we have now almost seems bullet proof when it comes to being afraid but every so often we see the dog the original rescuers talk about. Terrified of loud voices.

Let me state for the record that it's not something I would do, but you initially described it as a puppy...which can be picked up by the scruff of the neck (as its mom would). A 2 year old is a different story however.

The correct answer is yes.
And if repeat business isn't an issue, I would've gone QCP on his ass.
Animal cruelty is a crime people can do serious time for.
If this psycho does this in front of you, imagine what happens when he has no company in his house.
What happens when you leave and his 5 year old kid pisses him off?

Yep. The cowering breaks my heart.

They never recover, either, if they are mistreated at a young age. They will typically be timid and unpredictable the rest of their lives... all because some "tough guy" was so mentally weak that he had to take out his frustration on a helpless, confused animal.

DS initially described the situation as punitive punishment for walking on the carpet. Sounded that way to me, at least.
Doesn't sound like the owner picked the dog up the same way it's mother would if it was a puppy.

The fact that it cowered and tucked its tail is enough proof. Mistreatment.

I didn't ask how old the dog was but she was not fully grown but certainly not a pup....
I have a habit of calling almost all dogs puppy. Doug's got is almost 3 and I still think of her as a puppy.
It was big. Maybe 50 55 lbs? Lean...
How old is that?

I know dogs don't scream but that sound that dog made was as close to it as I've ever heard.

Depends. Huskies usually get bigger than that but could have been a smaller one.

For a female that would be small but not tiny. My old malamute mix (Rejected sled dog I got in Montana) was 60 pounds when fat. As a 5 year old she was 55 or so pounds of muscle.

I'd do the same thing you did. Say nothing. Get pissed. Text my friends and post about it. What are you going to do, yell at a customer and get yourself in trouble? 'Umm sir, was that appropriate to do to your dog?' He'd go apeshit on you and call your manager in a second. The best revenge is living well....and dropping a dead fish in one of his ducts.

It's rare to see this but when I do, I lie and tell them I was once a dog trainer.. I show them how to correct a dog and praise them.. I'm not sure if it helps when I'm gone but it makes me feel a bit better.

This. There likely has been and/or will be worse done to this animal when strangers are not in the house. Its a LOT easier said than done, but there are ways to report this.
