I think it's "Black Dog", isn't it?

Black Dog is the first track on 1V.

Rock n Roll is the first track on The Song Remains the Same. Should have added (Live)

I would say "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" off Wish You Were Here by Floyd. Hard to beat those synthesizers with their other-worldly tone.

Another very good one is "The Song of Silence" off Songs of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel.

As is usually the case, the correct answer is Rush.

Interesting to see all of the Presence love here.

Presence is a terrible album. By this time, Zep had lost it. The Achilles riff comes from the "San Francisco" segment from their live versions of Dazed and Confused from '73. Plant sounds like he's one of the chipmunks singing.

No way. "Achilles Last Stand" might be the worst song on there. "Royal Orleans", "Candy Store Rock", "Hots On For Nowhere", "Nobody's Fault But Mine"- all great.

'For Your Life' is the second best song on that album behind Achilles.

Page's guitars and Bonzo's drumming makeup for the terrible vocals on Achilles.

the vocals are terrible throughout. People need not wonder why Plant won't go on tour with Zep...he can't sing anymore, and you can date it back to this album. In fact you can really trace that back to Physical Graffiti. The vocals drag the whole thing down, that and a heaver reliance on JPJ, which works only so much.

Plant recorded Presence from wheelchair. He had broken his leg in a car crash and he wasn't sure if he could walk again, let alone perform.

The way it fades in on that dissonant piano chord is brilliant.

his voice was losing the upper register before Presence. I mean, bully for him but I find a lot off those last three albums to be listenable, but completely not up to par with other Zep.

Cherub Rock - Smashing Pumpkins/Siamese Dream
Astral Weeks - Van Morrison
The Nights of Wine and Roses - Japandroids/Celebration Rock

Beginning with Houses of Holy (maybe on Zeppelin IV, too), Page employed studio tricks to raise the pitch of Plant's vocals, because naturally he could no longer hit high notes consistently without his voice cracking, which began to occur as early as 1972. A prime example is 'Song Remains the Same', where the the pitch is so high (and speed so fast) that it sounds ridiculous. He did this on 'the Ocean' as well and later on "Achilles Last Stand.' For that reason, I can't stand listening to any of those songs.

On the other hand, the live version of SRST off the Song Remains the Same is outstanding, as is the Rain Song. Plant was in great form that night, which was the second night of their stay in NYC, July 28th in '73.

The Beatles were the first to change the pitch and speed of their songs and to use backward masking, which, I'm sure, is where Page got the idea from. You can hear this prominently on 'Magical Mystery Tour'. No way is the mix of that song at normal speed.

they weren't the first, but specifically "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" benefits from a sped up mix, as Lennon hits notes he'd never hit in real life.

There isn't a better version of Since I've Been Loving You out there besides the one that's on Song Remains the Same. Unfortunately, that collection of the three nights of concerts is pretty highly overdubbed, so it's tough to know what's real.
