That's the thing about slurs though. They can be damaging to an individual but they are meant just as much to be damaging to the group associated with them. It's about dehumanizing a whole group of people. It may also be used to dehumanize an individual. That's why there are attempts for the targeted groups to change the meaning to try and lessen that part of it.
