I don't remember that. I do remember Jeff Abbott getting an opportunity before Mags and Ozzie went off saying it was because Magglio had an ugly name.

Btw- how would anyone know what Phil Rogers says about anything??

I just tried to look that up--it says that the Sox signed him as an amateur free agent. What such a signing meant in the 1990s, I don't know.

He sure had good numbers, but overall as a ballplayer, I was glad to see him leave the Sox. He was damn near a superstar, but he seemed to be a bad teammate. Grounding into double plays, refusing to steal after a couple good seasons, lazy and stupid on defense, a juicer....

Nonetheless, that's high praise.

I think it was that he was left unprotected by the Sox and was available in the rule 5 draft as a minor leaguer.
