Dylan was a great if not exceptional writer and a decent guitar player but his voice sounded like cats fucking on the hood of a Buick and sometimes that's kinda hard to overlook.

Wrong. Great voice. Tangled Up In Blue is a million times better than the best Petty song.

But wow I have to lol hard and long over you saying "great voice".
I know you're a fan of his. I am too. But saying great voice is... unique. I understand that you must be a contrarian about pretty much everything and that's your thing but man... great voice? Cmon.

Has nothing to do with being a contrarian. I think he does. I enjoy a lot of his live stuff. Most people think Jerry had a bad voice and I disagree with them too. It's not really a big deal, not so sure what is annoying about starting my opinion in a thread where everyone is stating their opinions.

Dylan sounded best on Blood on the Tracks (my favorite album).
Also, Bootleg 5, Rolling Thunder Revue was probably Dylan at his peak vocally.

Your opinion is appreciated. Starting off saying "wrong" is what makes your post annoying. You want respect for your opinion and don't give the same to others. Unless you were going for a Trump like satire which is annoying for a different reason.

What sort of American Idol junkie do you have to be to listen to Highway 61 Revisited and say "eww, voice no good"? How is that even the point?

I'm sorry but this IS wrong. Believing somebody is wrong is not equal to not respecting their opinion.

Blood on the Tracks is a tremendous album and for anyone criticizing Dylan, have you listened to his folk songs from the early 60's? Talk about a musical catalog...

As for Petty, he is indeed still alive and the great CBS News had to issue a retraction:

http://www.metalinjection.net/latest-ne ... n-hospital

Doesn't sound good, but he was born a rebel, down in Dixie, on a Sunday mornin'...

Tom Petty was great, but he was not Bob Dylan and he was not Bruce Springsteen. He is one of those important bridge figures in the chronology of Rock. A lot of what Tom Petty represents is what Dave Grohl tries to be.
