Question 1: They will be more top-heavy. I don't know what the individual odds will be, but there's no way in football or hockey that the worst team in the playoffs has any decent odds to win it all. In baseball, they're a smart play if their odds are low.
That doesn't really make sense. Do you think a lot of people were betting on the Twins and Rockies to win it all?

Question 2: Okay, you think the 2017 Sox would beat the 2005 Sox 20 times out of 100. It would very likely be higher than that, but we can go with 20. What if 4 of those 20 wins happen to fall within a 7-game series? Would you be willing to say that the 2017 Sox are the better team?
That's not exactly what I'm saying. Upsets can happen in all sports. That would be an upset. To do it three straight series(4 if a wild card team) and win the title isn't the same as winning one 5 or 7 game series though.

leashyourkids wrote:
Question 3: The problem with your wild card answer is that, by definition, there was a team in its own division who had a better record.
That isn't a problem though. The difference between a wild card winner and a division winner can be a very small percentage of the total games. The difference between the Yankees and the Red Sox this year was two games. That is literally one head to head win different between them. For someone who isn't willing to say that the winner of a best of 7 series is "better" you are giving a lot of credit to a difference that would not exist if one game had gone differently between the two.

Question 5: Straw man. No one is saying it's completely luck. But you shouldn't use the word "probably." It is a fact that baseball playoffs have more randomness... but it's not just the playoffs. Individual baseball games in general have more randomness than other sports. Please see the links posted above.
It's not a strawman. You, and a few others, put an incredibly low value on postseason success. I said "most of the results on 'luck'". Do you think the better team wins most playoff series?

Seems like there is a lot of anxiety over the game today being displayed in this thread.

You took home field advantage. You should be feeling great.

That's one way to look at it.

On the other hand, its now a 3 game series with Scherzer and Strasburg pitching 2 of the 3.

Is there a reason you didn't respond to any of the links posted or question # 4?

Another often-cited yet flawed assumption. Home field doesn't mean much in baseball, primarily due to its inherent randomness.

Dusty Baker, when asked what it feels like to be back in Chicago in October:I got some homies here, so I got some back-up. I feel very safe

Dusty on Max Scherzer start today after being slowed down by hamstring woes: 'It's hero time.'

Scherzer does not look sharp. Hockey Gay is wrong. We are gonna score runs. Quintana has to not be bad.

When you said Kyle Schwarber was a gold glove candidate.

Rizzo up for potential bunt and Q threw it away to first on a pickoff attempt.

I shouldn't have dominated Rick so badly in our debate today. Bad karma for a Cubs win.
