Aurelio's Pizza in Arlington Heights is closing Sunday, to be replaced soon with a breakfast-oriented restaurant, officials said.

The 5,100-square-foot restaurant opened in June 2015 in a strip mall space at 2944 W. Euclid Ave., just west of Arlington International Racecourse. The franchisee's return on investment hasn't met expectations, according to Joe Aurelio, the company's CEO and president."There's no bad blood," said Aurelio, who wanted the restaurant to remain. "It's not going as fast as they thought it was going to."

One of the investors in the franchise, George Vassos, has experience in the restaurant business, as owner of Sam's of Arlington at 1863 W. Central Road. Plans are to convert the Aurelio's into a restaurant that specializes in breakfast.

"George had the idea of a breakfast place," Aurelio said. "The other investors trust that they'll sell more eggs and pancakes than they will pizza."

Vassos couldn't be reached for comment Thursday for additional details.

As for Aurelio's, the closure of the Arlington Heights location will leave a void in the local pizza chain's coverage area. Arlington Heights had been the company's northernmost location -- save for one near the Twin Cities of Minnesota. Most of the franchises are in the south and west suburbs.

With the closure of the Arlington Heights restaurant, the nearest Aurelio's will be in Addison. The company operates 41 locations in six states.

Aurelio, whose dad opened the first pizzeria in 1959 in Homewood, said he'll be looking for franchisees, with the hope of opening restaurants in the northern suburbs.

"We definitely know we have a great brand and a lot of followers on the north side," he said.

Aurelio's is mediocre at best. I never understood the appeal.

Nino's is the goods...

Back in high school, I was a Pizza Paddle guy, but they went downhill when the brothers sold...it's closed now.

Corner of Arlington Heights and Palatine Rds in that dumpy strip mall, right? Never went there, we were only a Rosati's/Malnati's family then. I just liked the name.

Originally, yes...they were right next to Citibank.

They moved up to Plaza Verde around 92 or 93...could go there at lunch, have a slice, a pop, and an order of fries for like 4 bucks.

Nino's is still one of the type 5 thin crust pizzas I've ever had. I always mean to get some when I'm up that way. Probably haven't had it in 10 years.

Agree with DB on Aurelio's sucking, but it might just be the ones by me. I like the sweet sauce, but the pizza itself is garbage.

Tortorice's was great, I used to live practically next door.

I never got around to trying Aurelio's. I've had Nino's once or twice but I grab Barnaby's most often, even though it isn't as good as the Des Plaines location.

You know, it's funny. Barnaby's kind of sucks if you don't remember to order it well done.

That said, I still go there all the time for lunch because it's a) cheap and b) totally nostalgic for me...I grew up in the neighborhood behind it.

That is a wonderful little neighborhood. I check out the houses from time to time for when I'm 50 and ready for yardwork.

Mock if you want, but it really is a nice neighborhood if you have a family.

This.

They add that funky orange cheese in there to make it look fancy, but the sauce is bland as fuck and the crust is not thin enough to be crispy.

Never was a fan.

My new fave is a place that I found on about Harlem Avenue, just south of Rt. 83 and next to Joe Daniel's bar. I forgot the name, but the pizza is amazing - could be the best I have ever had. Totally hand-made, bubbly, thin crust, hint of tangy and just the right hint of sweet in the sauce, and excellent sausage. Hole in the wall place.

we went to this location just a few months ago. Place was huge, cavernous, and during the normal lunch rush time on a Saturday, empty. Nobody but us in there. I remember thinking, man this place won't last long at this rate.

Can't stand the pizza. They have one in Geneva and I didn't like it there any better. Bad pizza.

I'm still a fan of Sam's out here locally. Can't find a better pizza.

there are many better spots, but Aurelio's South Loop location, in that Holiday Inn on Harrison, near the post office, was decent. Looks like they moved out of the Holiday Inn and over to Michigan Ave.

Aurelio's sucks at marketing their franchises.
