I don't think you can be slavish to a set number. Gio gets no less than 9 batters and then you leave it up to the situation.

This game will take 4+ hours with the amount of maneuvering the coaches will do.

I just think if Gio is cruising you still have to be careful with him. They got to him right away the 2nd time thru last time.

I dunno, I'll be curious to see how Joe handles Hendricks.

He gave him plenty of leash in game 1, and plenty of leash in game 6 of the NLCS and both of those worked out well. He pulled him early in game 7 of the WS, and if he was honest, despite the outcome, he'd probably admit he should have stuck with him longer.

If we don't have a lead by the time Scherzer comes in, it's a loss. Put up 2 in the first inning.

I'm sorry you can't judge relievers.

Yeah, but he pitched shitty in the two other appearances, both came in losses, in which he arguably was the biggest contributor.

Stat that means nothing: Scherzer's teams have lost his last 4 post season starts and in his career his team is 5-10 when he pitches.

The key to this game is going to be scoring more runs than the nationals. If you can do that you will win. Ready, set, break.

I hang a lot of the blame on his hippie ass.

I was the one who referenced the use in a game they were losing as odd as it was happening. However, if you look at it within the context of having Quintana and Lackey to both back up Hendricks today, you should have plenty in the pen.

That's why I was OK with it.

You made that up, right?

Because Joe will put Hendricks in the 8 spot just to make his first mark on the game.

Is there a time by which dusty has to name a starter?

No. LaRussa named Ankiel (everyone assumed Morris) like an hour before that fucking disaster. Probably ruined him.

They should start Scherzer and let him go til 50 pitches. He might get 5 innings.

The first 3 outs are the hardest ones to get...statistically

I was thinking the longer it took to name starter the more likely it was going to be Scherzer

Schwarber and Quintana will make key contributions to Cubs win tonight. They'll win because they are deeper than the Nats.

Cubs went with the absolute best defensive lineup.

I don't get the issue with using Lester there, it was a one run game. Maybe I'm to optimistic but if he's humming I could see Joe letting Hendricks pitch deep into this game. Maybe only need 9 or fewer outs from the pen today.

Also Jake hadn't pitched more than 6 innings since mid August so it was pretty easy to tell Lester before the game that he'd be the first man with the understanding that Jake wasn't going to be out there for 7+ innings.

That's a bet on Hendricks by Joe.
