I can only watch when we're on offense.

When we're on D, I'm having my wife watch and tell me if anything happens.

Okay, so anyway ...

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/downloads/y2007/06_the_batter.pdf

6.06 A batter is out for illegal action when—

...

(c) He interferes with the catcher’s fielding or throwing by stepping out of the batter’s
box or making any other movement that hinders the catcher’s play at home base.
EXCEPTION: Batter is not out if any runner attempting to advance is put out, or if
runner trying to score is called out for batter’s interference.

Rule 6.06(c) Comment: If the batter interferes with the catcher, the plate umpire shall call
“interference.” The batter is out and the ball dead.
No player may advance on such interference
(offensive interference) and all runners must return
to the last base that was, in the judgment of the
umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference.

If, however, the catcher makes a play and the runner
attempting to advance is put out, it is to be
assumed there was no actual interference and that
runner is out--not the batter. Any other runners on the
base at the time may advance as the ruling is that
there is no actual interference if a runner is retired.
In that case play proceeds just as if no violation had
been called.
If a batter strikes at a ball and misses and swings
so hard he carries the bat all the way around and,
in the umpire’s judgment, unintentionally hits the
catcher or the ball in back of him on the backswing
before the catcher has securely held the ball, it
shall be called a strike only (not interference).
The ball will be dead, however, and no runner shall advance
on the play.

Is that what happened on the Javy play? I think it did; I don't recall for certain.

He hit him slightly on the mask but the ball was past him. He didn't stop him from fielding it.

drives me nuts with these announcers. darling: and everything that can go wrong has gone wrong with the nationals and you can just see this falling into the hands of the cubs (paraphrased).

yeah. in the 6th inning? has he not been watching this bullpen? i don't trust any of these guys to hold a lead, 4 runs or 9 runs at this point.

Well see, the rule reads as binary ... slightly, real hard, irrelevant.

That part about the catcher not being able to securely hold the ball is what gives me pause as to whether it applies (otherwise, it easily does apply). I suppose it's possible there's some umpire discretion covered somewhere else in the manual that would give insight as to why it was called the way it was called.

Perhaps we'll table this for the moment given the present state of the game.
