I used to work at Papa John's back in the day. To make the sauce, you would open up 6 cans of tomato sauce, then dump in a giant bag of sugar.

And then use a Black & Decker drill with an attachment to mix it.

How much sugar do they dump into the pancake batter at IHOP?

Not. Nearly. Enough.

Yeah. Is this that controversial?

But when someone on here asks why our health care costs are so high, it is most obviously because we overconsume medical services and prescription drugs.

Do you think we go to the doctor too much because we want to or because we have to? If you think we want to, why? If you think we have to, how do we address the root causes of poor health? If you're saying that we shouldn't, why is it more important to swear orthodoxy to an ideology of "personal freedom" than it is to have a healthier population? If people are sick, dying, or hurting the economy by being in poor health, what good is it doing anyone?

I don't know that it's controversial, but it's pathetic if it's true. I think you're placing too much emphasis on the word "sugar." People envision white powder when you use that word (insert cocaine joke here). The better word would be simple carbohydrates. But on the glycemic index, you probably couldn't do much worse than pizza. It's probably hard for people to equate sugar to pizza because it's not necessarily sweet. But they should know that simple carbs are everywhere in a food like pizza whose base consists of flour, yeast, and in many cases, sugar itself.

I will only agree with you in part by saying that most people probably don't care. They don't really think about what they eat and would rather not. But if they care to educate themselves at all, they would very easily realize that foods like bread and pizza contain loads of carbohydrates. In fact, that's basically all bread is! It's not "hidden."

If someone in today's age doesn't understand the concepts of protein, fat, and carbs and also don't realize that simple carbs basically equal sugar, well then maybe natural selection isn't such a bad thing.

The poor should be left to die. They knew better.

you could be a reasonably healthy person eating toast for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and pasta for dinner every day.

That's pretty much where I'm at, except I split the difference between breakfast and lunch and have PBJ toast for one or the other.
