Too Much Joy being bigfan's favorite band was an interesting little detail. Who would have guessed?

First saw them live at DC's alternative radio station's annual HFS festival with an assortment of 90's college rock bands:

The Soup Dragons,
The Charlatans UK,
The Ocean Blue,
They Might Be Giants,
Graham Parker,
Catherine Wheel,
Too Much Joy,
The Wolfgang Press,
Manifesto

good live band, Too Much Joy. They'd play the Empty Bottle a couple times a year in the mid/late 90's.

oddball cover of one of their tunes:

Image

While 3 of the guys were Westchester County, Yale/Stanford/Berkley educated types. Tim Quirk, the lead singer, would go on to run Google Play. https://twitter.com/tbquirk Their drummer was a full-time NYC cop the entire time he was in the band. I somehow ended up at his NYPD retirement party/Too Much Joy reunion show one year at the old Knitting Factory in downtown Manhattan. I think that was the year Baron Davis knocked the top seed Mavs out of the playoffs in the first round. Don't think they've played many shows since then. Tim and the guitar player have a decent post-TMJ project, Wonderlick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8dUTIq ... ZCCShnlJO-

I already like a lot of those bands but Catherine Wheel is still a hole in the library for some reason.

I'm trying to explore some of those off-beat late '80s/early '90s Chicago alternative bands like Eleventh Dream Day or Poster Children. So far it's going ehh?

Poster Children are great
And I can guarantee I'm the biggest Charlatans fan on the board , if only bc I omit the U.K.

Back then im sure this was pretty common with A list celebrities. They knew they were protected by the studio.

dunno much about chicago bands from back then, other than wax trax type stuff.

but 90's alternative type bands that i listened to back then:

Track Star (SF band, crossover with The Aislers Set)

Image

The For Carnation were a Slint side-project. Saw them playing in the basement of St Andrews Hall one year. Was there to see Roni Size upstairs (3 Floors of Fun night) and wandered down into the Shelter and happened to catch The For Carnation's set:

that For Carnation Tales From the Crypt reminds me of this Yo La Tengo track:

https://youtu.be/GEVK7oJNw5A

That For Carnation playlist has some bands from back then on it. One of the more interesting albums on that list:

Anyone remember a Madison band called Rainer Maria? They were playing a weekly night at some club in Brooklyn last year.

Pretty sure I have the majority of releases by both Eleventh Dream Day and Poster Children.
I like El Moodio and Ursa Major by EDD, but I love Junior Citizen by Poster Children.
Plus they get extra points for having a hilariously ironic band name, as all 4 of them are some fugly bitches.
Not from Chicago, but another band that I usually lump in with the 90's heavy alternative dork rock is Walt Mink (from MN.)
They were pretty awesome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbnmxDSjifI
Rainer Maria is a band I've heard of but probably never heard their music.

Does Hum's You'd Prefer An Astronaut fall into that category? That's a good album.

I didn’t realize Poster Children were still that popular to this day.

They were nice people. Could whip up a crowd as well.

I think it's interesting she references the situation between her friends. Does this sound like a big deal to you, or just a drunken friend trying to see if he can get you into bed?:

https://cherylyeoh.com/2017/07/03/shedd ... riateness/

I'm struck by this sentence: "I couldn’t shake off thoughts of what might have happened if he had applied more force on me, or if I hadn’t been able to defend myself."

Mostly because I can identify so much. I often can't shake off thoughts of what might have happened if FavreFan and leash has started beating the shit out of me at Real Time Sports and I wasn't able to defend myself.

Her writing style makes for a painful-slough of a read. Besides being disjointed/repetitive in narrative, it's also very passive-voice and, well, just passive. Pick any paragraph at random and immediately stall in her wet-word-cement:

"I also think it’s really important" "I was saying to a friend" "First, let me say that" "I also want to say" ... just say it, ffs. Cut the cruff, give us the content.

Yeah, the rise of the Female Personal Essay is built on tics like that: not just the thinking, feeling, wanting to say, but dissociating from everything, too.

A hypothetical sexual assault that she's complaining about? #MeToo gone too far.

Dave's line "Just one night, please just this one time” recalls Harvey Weinstein's whiny, wimpy pleading. Do they think saying "please" is somehow either attractive or effective? Like the woman's going to be "well, I wasn't going to have sex with you because I'm not attracted to you in the least, but since you said 'please' like a whiny little bitch....let's go."

CH, i'm assuming you're already well versed in the elephant 6 stuff from the 90's...but if you're into experimentalism, check out slint's "spiderland" if you haven't already tried it. might not be your thing but i always dug it.

I remember when the Danny Masterson stuff came out years ago...it's all written off to Scientology, I guess.

After watching the expose on HBO and my wife watches that Leah Remini show about Scientology. There is some pretty messed up stuff going
on in that organization. I wish it wasn't Remini who was kicking the lid off of it, I find her to be pretty creepy. The fact she was a full blown
member gives the show the credibility it needs I guess.
