i think unions have merrit on occasion. not here. its his business. if one of these "journalists" wants to take the risk and begin a media business have at it.

he could of sold but instead shut it down. who's going to go through the hassle of dealing with union reps about bullshit, when your company isn't profitable? just to keep people employed? none of us wood.

Don't tell that to all the millennial pussies on Gizmodo. They are calling for the guy's head because they think a billionaire should continue to run an unprofitable business because he "has the money".

That's a self selecting sample. You're asking writers about how much writers should be paid.

I agree, its ridiculous to think he should run a non profitable business just because he can.

It's ridiculous to think blogging is the same job as working at a steel mill.

Blogging or journalism? There's a difference.

You can't make a living doing any of those, anyway.

White collar jobs in the business sector are next.

my FIL and his partners sold a construction company to a scottish company that was going to change things drastically. they got a lot of hate from their employees regarding it. But after 3 or 4 years of bitter union negotiations and it continually getting worse, they sold the company (they'd been flirting with the idea for a number of years) they were all in the early 60's and just had it with dealing with the unions.

The unions basically shot themselves in the foot in that instance and now deal with a different set of managers who are horrible.

Parkins said exactly this today. First he opined that they shut it down because "there would be less liberal media" , then he said "why can't he keep it running even if he isn't making a profit".

Somebody else start it back up if it was so good and made money.

I mean, there are guys who will run businesses that dont make money just for the greater good or they believe in what they are doing but yea, its not something you can expect or demand.

Parkins is a fucking moron.

If someone can figure out how to make money, they will. No going back to the old model.

I wonder how many people ran businesses that lost money but kept the businesses running for the good of society?

Even in today's market, if you provide a good enough media product, people will pay for it. I gladly pay $40 for The Athletic each year and will continue to do so. There is a model for it.

I value their sports writing more than I value an extra $40 in my pocket. That's how markets work.

If "The Atlantic" was a pay to access pub, I'd probably be willing to pay for it as well as it produces some high quality content, even if I don't always agree with it. They've really gone to the next level ever since Jeffrey Goldberg became editor-in-chief

What's wrong with The Atlantic?
