Did you read my post? A healthy person would be able to fight off the flu with a very low chance of serious health problems. Young children and the elderly are much more in danger from the flu.

Chus wrote:
You tried comparing the flu to polio earlier in the thread.
I did. Your point?

People with poor immune systems should probably get a flu shot. My mother-in-law got one yearly because she was in incredibly poor health in her last years. I'm not going to roll the dice with a vaccine that is about 50% effective, and hope that my kids (7 and 5, and healthy as horses) don't suffer a fate as awful as Leash's father has. I'll take my chances with the flu. I'm not in any way trying to convince you to see things my way, nor am I judging you if you get a flu shot for BRick Jr.

I still don't see the correlation between polio and the flu. Apples and oranges.

Boilermaker Rick wrote:
The idea that not getting a shot was the correct decision because you happened to not get the disease is a dangerous thought process. There are other valid reasons to avoid the flu shot. That one isn't just like it wouldn't be for the polio vaccine or the tetanus vaccine.

Again, I never said that I haven't gotten the flu, so therefore, I will never get it. I said that I haven't gotten it in decades, and when I did, I wasn't on death's door. It will be impossible for us to converse if you continue to misrepresent what I said. And that example is way down the list. Why are you so hung up about this?

We are just repeating ourselves at this point.

I didn't say in that reply that you haven't gotten the flu. I said you "happened to not get the disease is a dangerous thought process". It is in response to you using that flawed logic.
Chus wrote:

I should have said "not in over 20 years" rather than "never" but the general concept is the same. "I didn't get a shot and I didn't get the disease it was designed to stop over the time period of the shot" is a dangerous way to look at vaccines.

In my 40's I again got into the PCP regular visits routine and he would give me the shot every year. Don't really recall being very sick ever since outside of once a year head cold.

The "peanut butter" shot is just penicillin but it hurts like hell to get it IM to the ass cheek.

They are still doing it in Army basic as of the 2000s

They are only about 50% effective, as they are guessing which flu virus strains will be most active. MANY who get the flu shot get the flu anyway. A healthy adult has no problem fighting the flu. Senior citizens with poor immune systems should probably get one. I have never had a flu shot in my life, and I haven't had the flu for more than twenty years. My kids have never gotten one, and they have never had the flu either.

Confirmed. Had it in 2008.

My goodness, that is awful. I feel much better about my stance now.

Good points by both of you. Chus was right to ignore his kids Dr’s. Who do they think they are? Just because they have studied and trained health issues for years they think they know more than you and your internet friends. I once had an uncle who smoked 3 packs a day. His Dr. continually harangued him to quit. Well he lived into his 90’s. Ironically his wife - who never smoked but badgered him to quit and constantly complained about the smell - died of lung cancer. Anecdotal? Perhaps. But still a valid argument against the “anti-smoking” propagandists.

Anyway, your smoking analogy is a bad one. This seems reasonable to me:

Ignore Drs and health experts and believe anecdotal stories. That’s a solid basis for a decision.

It's not anecdotal. The CDC specifically warns about it. Have you just ignored everyone's posts and concluded what you wanted to? Read the thread.

Hey you stupid fuck... my father was paralyzed from a flu vaccine. Is it really that difficult to understand this? Got some arrogant, ignorant assholes around here. And Chus can make his own decisions for his kids. We’re not talking about polio here. It’s the flu, and the vaccines are a huge moneymaker and not that effective. But by all means, keep talking shit like you know a goddamn thing about it.

Won't get one. Not worth the risk. If it was for something important I'd roll the dice in a second but the flu... no thanks. I've never even had the flu anyway. When I was little I had asthma and got sick all the time, I grew out of it and my immune system has been damn good ever since.

Doctors aren’t infallible. If you don’t question them, you are doing yourself a disservice.

It’s rare, but it absolutely does cause things like Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

I heard about Gulliain-Barre, it's basically the disease where you turn into a raging burrito..right?

I don't ignore my kids' doctors. My kids have received all of their scheduled shots, other than yearly flu shots. My five year old is autistic, but I don't blame vaccines for it. I make exactly zero decisions based on what my internet friends think.

Thank you for your concern.

Yeah, about a year ago I had a problem with misdiagnosis of a rare and potentially serious medical condition that is often confused for other maladies. Before seeing my PCP about this matter, I researched my symptoms on the internet. After roughly 30 minutes of Googling, I was pretty sure about what I had. My PCP laughed at my opinion, though, and treated me for something else--to no effect. A few months later I wound up seeing a specialist who confirmed my self-diagnosis in a matter of minutes.

I have encountered similar issues with doctors a few times over the past two decades.

How does a doctor misdiagnose a missing arm?

There's a reason it's called "practicing medicine". Some doctors just throw shit at a wall to see what sticks. They're usually the ones that get bonuses from drug reps for using their shit.
