Maybe it was a good thing that Hillary ran up the score in a meaningless California race. Imagine if she underperformed George W. Bush in key states and lost the popular vote.

I don't really get the whole "ran up the score" thing. More people live in CA. More people vote in CA. This isn't another discussion about the fucked up Electoral College, but if more people vote for somebody, it's not "running up the score" because they all live in the same area. It's like Trump still showing the electoral map to try and claim how big his victory was. Yes Donald, there is a lot of red. Sadly for you cattle and tumbleweed don't vote.

Well the point is Trump did not even attempt to campaign in California and did not care how many millions of people he lost by there because it did not matter.

What don't you get? The DNC put more ad buys into Los Angeles, a large metropolitan area in a safe state (arguably the safest state), than Milwaukee, a smaller area in a swing state, reportedly because they wanted to make sure Hillary didn't lose the popular vote while winning the electoral college.

Sadly, many do not understand why the electoral college is necessary.

I think Donna Brazile may end up being more hated by Dems than Trump.

It's not necessary at all, but this comment doesn't surprise me.

You are stating very obvious things, but that's not running up the score. It means more people voted for her. I know part of the narrative is that Trump had this YUGE victory, but that isn't so. "Running up the score" just seems to be a way of trying to minimize the fact that he got Les Votes than she did.

Did concentrating on getting out the vote in Los Angeles help her win California more than she already would have won it? Did she not know the rules of the game?

There is a good argument for the popular vote but the electoral college does provide value in that there is more value to a state than just the population. It's the same reason we have the Senate and the Amendment rules that are heavily dependent on the individual states. If all of those were national public votes then it would pretty much just be the top 10 population centers in the country running things and every other area in the country would basically just be subject to whatever is best for those small geographic areas.

If we had a national popular vote, that'd be fine, but we don't. Don't play to win a contest that isn't being played. You don't win the Super Bowl by having the best scoring differential.

Trump was definitely in the fuckin' zone during campaign season. It's too bad nobody told Hillary that sometimes when you win, you actually lose.

There are more of those than there are Republicans who want to vote for Diet Republicans. Guys like denisdman talk about how disgusted they are by Republicans but when the rubber hits the road, are they ever voting Democratic? No.

I don’t know the answer but the guy who won Virginia is the ultimate Diet Republican. He admitted that he voted for W twice and as far as I can tell ran against “hate.”

Northam ran a terrible campaign and gave a pretty racist reply about Santuary Cities during the run-up. He was forced to left by the downballot candidates and there was a pronounced difference in his vote totals in districts where Rs were running unopposed. If anything he rode the coat tails of those to the left of him. A guy that before the real campaigning described himself as a moderate ended up supporting a $15 minimum wage, wanted the Right to Work law overturned, opposed charter school expansion, and is pushing for cap and trade policies. By the end of the election he was far and away, the most liberal candidate to represent the Ds for VA governor ever. That doesn't mean he'll follow through, but he's got a lot freshly elected delegates that are going to hold his feet to the fire. The
