Some of that is Sears own fault. Most of their products and customer service is/are crap.

And the good ones they historically have had have been viewed as expendable assets to boot.

Maybe they should put it in Rockford. Talk about buying low.

I don’t know why, but this struck me as funny.

I imagine your mayor giving Bezos a tour of the local windmill.

Harvey is the most fucked up place in Cook County and that is saying something. Would the old Lincoln Mall site be big enough? My guess is if its in this area it will be in Chicago.

It's going to Atlanta. Book it.

Paddy Power has Atlanta as the favorites at 3/1. Austin's 2nd at 7/1. Tho those are betting odds so who knows.

Most of the analysts I read say that Denver would be the best spot--except they figure Amazon wants HQ2 to be East a bit more than Colorado. Austin-Dallas and then Atlanta and surrounding larger cities (Charlotte/Nashville) seem to be the best bets. Since they're likely looking to attract workers from around the country/planet and not rely on locals to staff up HQ2, I'd guess they skip Atlanta and hit some smaller, "hipper" place. Austin/Charlotte/Nashville Possibly North Texas (Dallas Fort-Worth metroplex).

Spent quite a bit of time in Atlana for work--it already/really is a tech center, duh--and I've yet to meet anyone in tech down there who was originally from Atlanta and who wouldn't move the fuck out of Hellanta if they could land a job in a more enjoyable/livable city.

Put their HQ2 a few hours U-haul of Atlanta (Charlotte/Nashville) and they will staff up easily.

Quote:
Everyone in the real estate business is scrambling to figure out where Amazon's new headquarters will land.

With the potential for 50,000 employees and $5 billion in investment it's the economic development prize of the decade.

CoStar Group, the real estate information and marketing firm, quizzed hundreds of real estate execs about where Amazon should put its new HQ2.

Austin and Dallas were at the top of their list, with Atlanta and Nashville right behind as favorites for the Amazon move.

"While more people picked Austin, many were willing to give Dallas the edge because of its superior air transportation system having two major airports, including an international airport," writes CoStar's Mark Heschmeyer. "Amazon currently has more than 20,000 employees in Texas."

Austin's odds for getting Amazon's HQ were as high as 3 to 1 according to CoStar's poll. Dallas was given 6:1 odds.

"Atlanta is home to the busiest international airport in the U.S. It also has a large high-tech employment base having emerged as a mecca for huge data and logistics centers," Heschmeyer said. "One downside some observers cited was that Georgia is currently home to only about 500 Amazon employees.

"Nashville with its best odds of 8:1 was favored for having a hip, strong cultural scene, large growth capability, affordable living and occupancy cost and a reputation as an up-and-coming metro area."

Amazon has more than 7,000 employees in Tennessee.

Denver was the fifth most picked city on CoStar's list.

Digital retailing giant Amazon announced early this month that it was hunting for a place to park thousands of new workers over the next decade.

Communities all over the country are competing for the headquarters deal.

Man Austin is already bursting at the seams with their infrastructure. Oracle is building a 30k workforce office there and if you add on top of it another 50k amazon workers. Its going to be a bigger nightmare than it already is to get around that city.

Just what we need- more crony capitalism to help Jeff Bezos put others out of business. People are worried about Trump being a dictator. This guy is far more dangerous. Why don't you guys ask Wheaton Zach how Bezos abused him?

I can understand electronics stores like Best Buy being destroyed by Amazon

i'm a least somewhat surprised tho that clothing places like Macy's and Kohls would be

I've bought shoes a few times from Amazon and I think a hoodie or something...but clothes are one thing I think you kinda need to try on. Plus there are obv a lot of people who simply like the act of shopping & browsing for clothes

Macy's, JC Pennies and Kohls have had other issues than just Amazon. People stopped shopping at large department stores especially for clothes. That is part of Sears' problem as well. Behind appliances and tools, at one point Sears' largest sales came from women's clothes. I think the rise of sites like Etsy and all the MLM pyramid scheme "small business'" that push clothes on all their friends and families in addition to other online shopping. Additionally, people's clothing choices changing have hurt those stores in general too. Look how many lazy ass women just wear stupid leggings now. Less people dressing nice equals less people shopping in nicer department stores.

Unless you are really oddly shaped/sized Prime is great for clothes and shoes. Free returns no questions.

The Austin highway system can't handle a massive Amazon outpost anywhere near the hip places to live. There is only one Interstate, and the section downtown is one of the most congested stretches of highway in the country, it is even bumper to bumper at 1am on a Sunday.

This is nuts.

https://www.seattletimes.com/business/a ... _title_1.1

Real things cities are offering to get Amazon HQ2

*Chicago: Let Amazon keep employees' income tax
*SoCal: Give away $100M in land
*Boston: City employees working just for Amazon
*Fresno: Let Amazon decide how to spend tax dollars

They are going to give so much away that it's going to be a net loss to land the HQ.

It kinda makes sense in a way.

The valley sucks. The weather and scenery are great but man its a fucking industrial park. Schaumburg of the Bay. And SF isn't that great of a city. Yes its beautiful but it suffers from shit location and its food/culture/arts scene is trash. Public transit is a joke and traffic is nightmarish. Its been overgentrified and overpriced. Its barely a real city.

So everyone is hoping that if you land this HQ it'll boost the tech industry to a million because the influx of talented people will just kind of lead to snowball effect of start-ups and other shit. Whatever, I dont really buy it but that I'm guessing is the argument cities are making to themselves.

The problem with Chicago is the problems it has are not first world. "there are way too many carjackings, we have created a task force to solve this" is shit you expect to hear about Johannesburg or Rio...not Chicago. At this point its probably a better idea to just preserve what little dignity the city has left and say "Look if you come here great but we are not going to beg". Amazon isn't going to pick Chicago. Their people dont want to live in a fucking warzone where they have to worry about driving at night. If that's the case put HQ2 in Cape Town where the weather is nice and the women are stupid hot.

So after all that drama it's just going to New York and Arlington County. Great, should be a real shot in the arm for New York.
