The ironic part is that this could be the gateway to municipal broadband becoming big in the United States which is another thing that the cable companies have fought hard against.

How so?
It's been something that a lot of big cities have wanted to do for a while. If the cable companies are too greedy and enough users get tired of dealing with it then it could end up pretty popular.

To give any real answer it would require seeing just what the ramifications of this ruling, and Congress likely accepting it, would be.

You misunderstand .... of course this is something MANY cities, both great and small, have been kicking around for quite some time .... I just figure that it will be even more difficult for a municipality to provide something like this than it was previously.

I guess I just don't see this as a catastrophic event. I remember dial-up and it wasn't that long ago. I suspect the future of broadband will be fast enough for everyone.

Well given your stance on universal healthcare I find your supporting this without question odd.

The reason it becomes more likely is if the cable companies become more expensive/controlling and municipal broadband can be created as a workaround. For example, if you have to pay your ISP and extra $10 a month for access to Youtube, Netflix, and Hulu, and another $5 a month to get access to social networks then the evil government internet that is free of these issues is a more palatable option than now.

That and the technological level of those that don't want to be pissed off should not be dismissed. If things get so bad I am sure pirates, hackers and other sneaky nerds will fight the good fight. If not that I would hope these giants of the web would be wise enough to keep future regulation and breaking up of their monopolies at bay.

What?

I don't think you have any idea what municipal broadband is. It's basically a public option if you want to use healthcare as a comparison, and I would be fine with a public option if done with the goal of competing rather than destroying the competition.

Even with all of that, I never even said it was a good idea. It depends a lot on what happens because of this change.

You don't see the cost barrier to this? Or do the municipalities just seize all the servers, routers and cable/fiber of the present owners?

If on the other hand you think the municipality will just talk the companies into giving them special entry to make them less money I doubt it.

So JoRR, Nas, and Seacrest are going to charge us to use this site? Is this where we're headed JoRR?

I thought you were championing a takeover of internet service by local municipalities not just an option. Similar to the old dealings cities had with cable providers to give marginal service.

It won't be a catastrophe. It will just be worse for no reason and it will stifle innovation regardless of what Comcast PR says.

There just isn't a good reason for this unless you own Comcast stock.

It is leaning that way. First taking Walmart's money for the poor and now free internet for all!

I missed this the first time but there would be some cost barrier to it but it would be viewed as an infrastructure project and it would have a path to being cost neutral. In the short term, it would probably start off as a wireless network designed mostly for moderate use and then expand. This would be dependent on how the established options behave though and in reality it would probably be more of a way to put pressure on them for the good of the population rather than a true and complete competitor.

I don't think Ugie has a firm grasp on this. This website would almost certainly not be affected in a negative way, outside of threads that are loaded with gifs. Most other sites people here enjoy would be though, especially free streaming porn sites.
