I am only three seasons into the Wire, so my opinion my change after seasons 4 and 5, but I don't get the love for Bunk. He is a good character, but I don't see him as one of the best characters ever.

He’s involved in 3 or 4 of the 10 best scenes in the series, IMO. One of the funniest characters ever.

Maybe. Maybe not.

There are way more options now, so the writing is bound to be better overall. But if that’s true, then modern shows have a plethora of good characters who share the action.

Older shows had protagonists who dominated the spotlight.

Archie Bunker is All in the Family.

Cliff Huxtable is The Cosby Show.

George Jefferson is The Jeffersons.

Also, these old shows were from a time when there weren’t teams of writers with decades of giant shoulders to stand on. They were originals.

Alan Alda would tea bag Jon Hamm.

Archie Bunker should not only be on every top ten list, he should be near the very top.

Oh I am good with Bunk being on the list. He is a good character. Just not one I would consider the greatest of all time. But I just cannot fathom watching the show and having Bunk but no Omar. IMO Omar is far and away the best character on the show

I think Omar is the best too but I can see arguments to the contrary. If you got through season 3 you should have, iirc, seen Bunk’s best scene and one of the best scenes of the series. When he calls out Omar for being a predator. Both characters at their peak in that scene.

Yeah that is def one of the best scenes.

The difference in the two from my perspective is that Omar is the best character in every scene he is in. Bunk isn't.

That’s fair.

Bunk’s drunk scene when he burns his clothes is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.

I don’t know what any of that stuff is. (Assuming Sanford is from that Sanford and sons show I’ve heard of)

Bunk had some great moments - he and Omar being the best as mentioned - but I don’t think he was a great character. You don’t know much about Bunk.

McNulty is the opposite. You know a lot about him and I didn’t think he was a particularly great character either.

Which I think goes to show how strong the writing and supporting characters on that show were.

Well, we know more about Bunk than we do Omar, right? I think the show gives you a solid amount of background on Bunk throughout the series.

True, a good amount about Bunk. But we know quite a bit about Omar. We see him at home, at work, interactions with the people he cares about, how people think about him in the community and his impact on young people there.

He seems like a tertiary-type character but they do give you a lot about him.

I wish they gave more info on how Omar came by his code. I know The Wire Prequels covers it a little but I think the show could’ve gotten some nice mileage out of it.

Yes. Him, Barney Fife, and Ed Norton are the foundation for the funny modern day sitcom characters.
