I'm not sure why, but it took me about 10 viewings to be anything but indifferent about it. I guess the themes of it really didn't resonate with a 20 something.

this guy's a fucking robot. a fucking robot set to "annoy."

I actually think that A Christmas Story is the best Christmas movie that captures the spirit and feelings of what it was like to be a kid at Christmas. If you look at it as someone telling the story of his childhood around the theme of Christmas you start to see that it's a retelling of some of the highs and lows of being a kid centered around Christmas. I think it's easy to relate to many of the things that happen to Ralphie along the way with the highs and lows. Ultimately, the end of it you understand that it was a great period of your life and something you can look bad on fondly.

I think It's a Wonderful Life is similar for adults, though Christmas is less of a central theme so it's more of a general story of the highs and lows of being adult along with the sacrifices you have to make that a guy like Ralphie didn't have to do. I think this is what it took me a while to figure out about It's A Wonderful Life. I wonder if some of you A Christmas Story haters watched it under the same line of thinking if you'd like it more.

Christmas Vacation, Scrooged, Elf, Miracle on 34th street, and others are all great movies but I don't think you can look at them as a time capsule of what life is like during a certain age.

i think that's what the point of "a christmas story" is--i mean, it's nostalgia. it's about being a kid. it's somewhat exaggerated humorously, as anecdotes typically are. pretty easy formula.

it's like "the wonder years", even though it predates it. speaking of which, "the wonder years" had some fantastic Christmas episodes.

The ending speech in Scrooged gets me every time. Captures the best part of Christmas (people being kind to and appreciating each other) to me.

I think A Christmas Story is something you don't get if you didn't get in on the ground floor, so to speak. There was no ceremony or ritual involved with watching it in my family (we were a White Christmas/Miracle on 34th Street/It's a Wonderful Life family); in fact, we never watched it at all. I could probably watch it now and objectively to some conclusion of "Christmas sure was fun as a kid," but I don't think I'd have any sentimentality about it coming from watching it year after year as I grew up and having those changing perspectives.

Also, even though it predates my childhood by a generation, there are MANY relateable things in it. It may be the most relateable Christmas movie for MANY of us here.

So, here's something that always bothered me.

When Rosemary Clooney goes to get some buttermilk in White Christmas, Bing is at the piano playing a little jingle. It's the "American Family Insurance" jingle. There's no mistaking it. Some dude ripped that off and sold it as his own.

I'm guessing that AFI wasn't that big in 1954. Either way, somebody is ripping someone off.

XMas Movie Trivia - Carl Switzer aka Alfalfa plays a significant role in both Wonderful Life and White Christmas.

He opens the gym floor under George and Mary and is also the picture of the dog-faced brother of the Haynes sisters in White XMas but never appears.
