Guess this aired last night. Lionel Richie, Norman Lear, some old lady famous for dance, Gloria Estefan and LL. I'm not sure how much of an honor this really is but is / was LL that big and or impactful ? Gonna need a ruling on this.

If it was on CBS, that explains everything, and probably included several plugs for NCIS: LA.

LL is a pioneer of hip hop

I'd liken him to Chuck Berry for Rock n Roll.

Rakim gets more love but they both ushered in a style still used today.

I'd put those two in a hip hop Hall of Fame before anyone.

This is one of the few times when I wish Bernstein actually posted here so we could get a true expert opinion

Chuck Berry? I wouldn't go that far. He was important but now that fucking important.

Well, like I said I consider he and Rakim to be the two biggest pioneers so Chuck Berry seemed like an apt comparison.

Run D.M.C. were more impactful than LL Cool J.

I don't know if groups are factored in but their impact on rap was much greater.

Run DMC was part of the rap era where every line ended with...in the place to be

Rakim and LL took us out of that silliness into what we all love today.

I recognize Run DMCs contribution but they just aren't my cup of rap.

I was never a big fan of LL Cool. Some of stuff was a little too sappy for my blood. He was a pioneer in the sense of marrying R&B with Hip Hop.

As far as that particular era goes the two best lyricist were Rakim and KRS One. Those two brought the noise and KRS One was one of the pioneers of conscious rap.

Chuck D was also in the conversation too.

Chuck D is right. Put him there too.

KRS is another one that I recognize his place but just never got into it.

His verse on Classic (with Kanye, Nas, and Rakim killing it) ruined him for me. I know that's obviously well after his prime but it's what I associate him with.

A lot of this is my age. Rap before 1990 is not my thing.

I get that. For me the golden age of hip hop was about 87 -88 til about 96.

Rakim's best song ever was done in about 87. Follow the leader

KRS One's best stuff was pre 91. It is easy to see how you could have missed it. He fell off after about 93 for me but his earlier works were pretty good.

Rakim wasnt the same after about 92. Didnt care for songs like Know the ledge and Don't Sweat the technique.
. His best album ever was done in 88. Paid in Full.

Let the Rhythm hit em was pretty good too though.

Its so funny when he first dropped most people believed that Eric B. was the MC.

And people say rock and roll is dead.

You got it backwards..dmc was the demarcation from the old to the new school...and during the time ll was considered a soft mc, rapping shirtless for the women fans. This in an era where skill and originality were paramount.

Yep. I agree. There was always a lot of R&B to what LL did. I never cared for all the singing in my Hip Hop. No one in hip hop was bigger than Run DMC during the mid to late 80's.

They helped change an entire culture and their influence on hip hop is second to none.

My Adidas changed the style of dress. Walk This Way helped facilitate the marriage of rock and hip hop. They were in movies.

Their lyrics were never controversial and i don't recall them taking political or social stances but they were definitely hip hop nonetheless.
